Cat Janice Covers the Spectrum of Human Emotions in Debut Album

0

Driving with a fine fusion of emotional integrity and energizing musicianship, songwriter and artist Cat Janice delivers a fresh thread of artistry to the modern music scene. The indie/alt gem presents a skilful balance of soaring vocals, snappy guitar lines and euphoric synths, resulting in a uniquely immersive take on sizzle pop. Proving both exciting and deeply human, Cat’s versatility knows no limits. From the dance-pop rhythms to finely-honed vocals, Cat is equal parts skill and character. Her love for music transcends the limits of style, with her songs radiating strong grooves and confident melodies that feel genuinely fresh.

Born and raised in Northern Virginia by a vastly musical family, Cat took to violin and piano at an early age. What followed was 14 years of classical training, with valuable time spent as part of orchestral productions, jazz bands and theatre shows. The D.C. music world would soon embrace the young artist as both a pop sensation and a writer/producer to watch that diversity flourish all the more so.

Her new nine-track debut album, Modern Medicine, is inspired by the artist’s quest to embrace the full spectrum of human emotions and grant herself the permission to feel them fully. It serves as a testament to the freedom of being human and the profound significance of emotional expression, which is seen as our greatest legacy. The music weaves together various themes, drawing from her personal struggles with a painful divorce, loss of a close friend, the sting of betrayal, the discovery of transformative love, and her ongoing battle with progressive cancer. Ultimately, Modern Medicine emphasizes the healing power of living in the present moment, serving as a form of medicine.

Focus track “Who Do You Think You Are” narrates the process of falling in love and wanting to capture the feelings of confusion and unbridled joy that surrounds those first few months of getting to know someone. Cat shares, “I had just gotten back from spending hours in a basement studio, laughing and singing with him for a TikTok video. I got home and in an instant the song started coming to me. Falling in love that way is thrilling, scary, and borderline emotionally sedative. We joke about how whenever we are together now, we always feel tired and sleepy because of all of the happy hormones.”

Inspired by the likes of Remi Wolf, Benee, and Willow, Modern Medicine encapsulates a similar groovy, fun, danceable feel which juxtapose heart-wrenching themes, including betrayal, heartache and anxiety. Cat confides, “I hope that people enjoy the ride of the array of emotions through the music.”

Despite the obstacles she continues to face, Cat’s lust for life is infectious. Her new music is sure to light up the airwaves globally, uniting heartfelt lyrics and electrifying production. With a breadth of musicianship and optimistic grooves, Cat Janice is an unstoppable creative force.

Popguru celebrates its 25th anniversary with compilation album, The World According To Popguru: Single-Minded

0

Having done A&R for ten years and been accommodatingly downsized by EMI Music Canada, Graham Stairs came to the belated conclusion that he was ill-suited to work for other people and that it was time to be his own boss for better or worse. Graham Stairs founded Popguru Sound & Vision in 1998, which is now a fully integrated music company involved in artist and producer management, music publishing, sync licensing and its two record labels: The Confidence Emperors and Popguru.

The World According To Popguru: Single-Minded is a collection of early singles released by Popguru Sound & Vision between 1998 and 2005, including songs by Red Autumn Fall, Hush Hush, Stirling, Hennessey, Beautiful 2000, and The Blue Raincoats.

Available now, The World According To Popguru: Single-Minded can be streamed and shared in full: https://popguru.lnk.to/singleminded

The compilation release includes restored music videos, never-before-released tracks, and new video footage. There will also be a 25th anniversary live celebration in the fall that will include current artists such as Odario, The Wilderness of Manitoba, John Orpheus, Sam Casey, Alex Exists, and more.

“I have experienced a lot of highs and a lot of lows over 25 years, but working with the Popguru creative community has made it all worthwhile and I’m looking forward to hearing the next great new song that gets me excited,” Stairs says.

Castles in the Sky by SIMFONIA

0

UK-based artist SIMFONIA just released a cover of Ian Van Dahl’s “Castles In The Sky”…but took it into a 50/50 experience of an ambient and a dance song…

For the first half of the cover, you’ll experience “Castles In The Sky” like never before…it’s ambient…spacey…free…you feel free, completely unleashed, floating among the clouds…

…then for the second part of the experience, you’ll get a more modern, dance-pop mood…once again, taking the original down a completely different road…it’s a chill modernization of the original’s energy…but way more chill.

The instrumentation used by SIMFONIA is absolutely on point, for the ambient part of the experience…we got to soar high in the skies with the help of the smooth strings section along with the pad sound beds…and for the dance part…we get sucked into it gradually with the shakers and percussions, bit by bit until we find ourselves face to face with the harp sound, a staple of the original song…then the electronic kick creeps in and we find ourselves deep into the dance experience part.

SIMFONIA chose an iconic song to cover it…and SIMFONIA did an absolutely amazing job…the life energy of “Castles In The Sky” is going strong through what SIMFONIA did with that cover.

SIMFONIA already has a lot of releases that can be experienced on the Soundcloud page…this could be what you’ve been looking for in new and unique music…go, check it out.

SIMFONIA, we wish you all the best in life, you’re awesome and we can’t wait to see what you’ll bring next to the world through your music.

Cheers!

Immersion by Claire Bigley

0

New Orleans based pianist and composer Claire Bigley releases a new track that has a message, a message of a healing nature that she wants to share with the world, this message is “Immersion”.

Before going into the aspects of “Immersions” and why it works as meditative and healing…let’s get to know the artist more…

Claire is based in New Orleans, USA, a city with a long history in music already, a city that has some musical genres tied to its name because of how important and influential the city was and is.

Claire is a composer and pianist at her core…she has some of the most unique and charismatic influences across the musical spectrum ranging from Olufur Arnalds and Nils Frahm to the old masters like Chopin, Debussy, Mahler, Barber…and more.

Already, Claire has some of the most iconic musicians and composers as her influences…and in my opinion, your idols can give an idea of your essence…and this is why when we listen to Claire’s latest track “Immersion” you get to experience many aspects of many different charismatic musical storytellers that popped up as her influences.

“Immersion” is a meditative, healing, minimal, storytelling musical experience that flows like a very surreal dream…it grabs you and puts you in a trance state where you start to soar and explore yourself from within.

The track is mainly piano based with some sonic textures layered across pads and soundbeds, adding to the overall experience and giving it that dreamy state…the healing part comes from the dynamic piano composition, the emotions that run through the composition itself and how its played, performed and captured.

The music has an ascension feeling to its compositions, in the way of taking you from a stationary point and gradually lifting you in the air until you’re soaring high and feeling that emotional energy from inside.

Claire has crafted a very emotional journey for all people to enjoy and by the end of it, hopefully you’ll enjoy a relaxed emotional state…that is the message that Claire hopes to send to everyone.

Speaking of iconic moments in life, Claire had the pleasure on two occasions in the past few years to play with the LPO (Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra) on a Harry Potter concert and their Home Alone holiday concert in 2022, putting her mark on only as a composer but also as an extremely solid musician and performer.

We hope to hear more from Claire, her music is always an experience to go through…and this is one of the reasons why art should be pursued…to make the emotional journeys of other people much more tolerable…at least one of the many reasons why art is an absolute gift to have.

Claire, we wish you all the best in life…can’t wait to hear what you have next for the world.

Cheers!

How Do I Delete You? by FOND OF RUDY

0

How Do I Delete You?” is the latest release by Indie-pop band Fond Of Rudy and it features a combination of electro-pop and pop-rock elements that will appeal to a different bunch of fans.

The song has some clean guitars and some distorted ones playing a nice chord progression during the chorus. The swiftness of the change from verse to chorus will make you want to repeat the song to get those goosebumps over and over.

Another element I thoroughly enjoyed were the vocals and how they were processed to fit well with the electronic nature of the song. The lyrics being sung by those emotional vocals will leave their mark on you, as they are heartfelt and memorable and the arrangement allows them to fit with the song’s beat so well that it becomes anthemic…I could already imagine myself at a stadium concert singing along with these guys to this song.

At the end of the day, there are so many alternative and indie bands…but only a few, lime Fond Of Rudy stand out of the crowd. It’s hard and rare nowadays to make such a song and make it with enough accessibility, catchiness, and emotion all while keeping tight instrumentation that both grips the listeners/fans and respects the sound they love and admire. Give this song a listen if you were a fan of 2000s pop-rock anthems.

I Really Do by MARTYN SCOTT

0

“I really do” is the latest single by UK pop-rocker Martyn Scott. The song mixes a bunch of pop elements with a rock-ish twist.

The song starts with a nice and smooth chord progression and a very characteristic bassline. The drum machine sounds a lot like 80s pop-rock anthems, meanwhile, the vocals sound intimate and focused…creating more of a modern rock feel.

Speaking of the vocals, they maintain a level of nasality and softness on the higher parts at the end of the verse and the refrain…Martyn seems to be in touch with his belting range and mixed voice technique. The chorus sounds much more dreamy than the verses, so the anticipation for it is really high.

There was a surprise waiting for us… a fantastic guitar solo. With the song’s accessibility and pop-rock feel I wasn’t expecting such an overdriven effect on the guitar solo, but here we are with the icing on the cake.

All in all, this song is super likable and sticks in your head the first time you’ll hear it. I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of 80s pop-rock.

Album: The Tree on Saffron Path by Cameron Mizell

0

On this latest Cameron Mizell release, we find a quartet of extremely proficient musicians executing sophisticated compositions that travel from the realms on chamber music, to Christmas music, then all the way to improvisation-based folk jazz, and then back, all the time remaining clean, cinematic, easy to follow, and loaded with a distinctive character that makes each note counts.

A prominent figure in the diverse musical landscape of Brooklyn, Cameron Mizell is a composer and a guitarist whose spheres of cinematic jazz and improv music revolve around the concept of economy, which is why to Mizell, each note on the sheet counts, and if a note is sufficient, no more should be added, and he readily applies this philosophy to compositions on ‘The Tree on Saffron Path’, even if it is hard to see at times. On ‘The Tree on Saffron Path’, Mizell features a string section accompaniment composed of violinists Concetta Abbate and Zosha Warpeha, playing 4 and 5 stringed violins respectively, alongside cellist Julie Kim, and the 4 of them easily weave together tapestries that provoke nostalgia, festivity, or melancholy, inducing hypnosis, or creating dream-like states.

American parlor music-inspired moments are abundant on ‘The Tree on Saffron Path’. The serene textures created by the strings, mixed in a roomy fashion that sounds intimate and adds warmth, always creates an atmosphere of folk being performed for a rich clientele in American countryside parlors in the 19th century. Audible particularly well on ‘An Unclaimed Piece of Land’ and ‘She Wants To Believe’, the former sounding like a soundtrack for a warm gathering of generations, with its super prominent violin solo duet, and the latter a perfect backdrop for a wedding ceremony, romantic, lifting, and sweet.

The melancholic sophomore piece, ‘Never Felt The Wind’, is an immediate standout among the album’s tracklist. With a focus on rich harmonic and melodic content, the song’s writhing harmonic composition and impressionistic guitar leads played on top are among the album’s most inspired and immersive. Discussing the stunning ‘Remember When We Were Old’ is probably the right time to mention how utterly beautiful the sounds of the recorded guitars are. Cameron Mizell’s light and balanced touch, combined with the roomy, approachable tones produced by his semi-hollow electrics are magical throughout. The improvised part on the piece is a dazzling display of Mizell’s sensibilities and his tight bond with his instrument and is among the album’s tastiest passages.

The calculated one-two hit of ‘Strange Behavior’ followed by ‘Light, Trapped Under a Cloud’ is distinctive. The two cuts are primarily revolving around intricate guitar lines, largely layered, supported by the strings, and while the first is built around a cyclic motif that toys with dissonance in its notes, that proceeds to get more intense as the strings come in dissonant as well, the second one is a driving, melodically fulfilling piece that sees the guitar played rhythmically as the strings soar in the background, the two elements performing an intricate, melodic dance sequence.

Inspired by legends such as Bill Frisell and Philip Glass, it comes as no surprise that the music Cameron Mizell puts out will ultimately be thoughtful, sophisticated, and rich, and it was exciting to see how his reversal of his composing technique managed to bring out another dimension to his musicality. Mizell composed his previous solo release, during the year of the pandemic as a way to cope with things, by improvising ambient layers, and then improvising melodies on top of them, and ‘The Tree on Saffron Path’ seen a reversal in this process, as Mizell started his compositions with melodies or phrases, and then devised harmonies to back them, with outstanding results. This album is a weighted addition to the already healthy catalog of one of Brooklyn’s hidden gems.

Mission by Natalie Clark

0

Natalie Clark’s latest single release ‘Mission’ is a melting point of a plethora of shades of pop. From chamber to alt to folk pop, this hard-to-define affair is a fiery and confident piece of music.

Natalie Clark is a singer and songwriter who grew up in Glasgow, but is currently based in Los Angeles. Her sound can be safely described as pop and her latest release is a powerful song called ‘Mission’. Co-produced by Todd Spadafore in his Los Angeles studio, the duo worked on the song idea provided by Clark with one goal in mind, to achieve an empowering sound to reflect the song’s words, and it is a goal that was surpassed.

The song features a minimal composition that is formed of simple harmony and a few melodic hooks, but where the song shines is in its unusual instrumentation, utilizing booming bass horns and Enya-inspired creamy string arrangements that’s probably got to do with her Celtic roots. The sound produced is a healthy mix of chamber and folk pop sounds that produces an output unlike anything other than Natalie Clark.

With a strong message of the mission Clark is on, the song’s music follows suit, and the cohesive results are loud and proud.

Keep Quiet by Livi Jacobs

0

Livi Jacobs returns with another stunning single that acts as a departure from her latest rocker ‘Should’ve Known’. ‘Keep Quiet’ is a chill and pristine acoustic-based folk-leaning song that sees Jacobs pulling off her most daring vocal chops.

Punta Gorda based singer and songwriter Livi Jacobs has a tasteful voice and a matching knack for writing solid, distinctive pop songs. Already at her 3rd single, Livi Jacobs’s previous releases have been getting consistent praise for those 2 exact points, and her 3rd, ‘Keep Quiet’ pushed the high-powered pop rock vibes to the side a bit, in favor of something more serene and restrained. Make no mistake, ‘Keep Quiet’ still has a beating heart based in rock, a notion that can be easily felt in the song’s expansive and powerful chorus, with healthy, melodic yelps from Jacobs, as the beats get ferociously reverberated, injecting the song with a soaring sensation that totally elevates the chorus in comparison to the subdued, minimal verses, which in turn utilize Jacobs’s heartfelt and confident delivery on top of sparkling acoustic guitar arpeggios.

With a healthy structure that sees contrast used to its best effect, ‘Keep Quiet’ is one more addition to the growing catalog of Livi Jacobs, a talented, upcoming pop artist who has a stunning vocal and an outstanding presence. ‘Keep Quiet’ will be another sure step for Jacobs in her road to stardom.

I Do by Colleen Rennison

There’s something enthralling about Colleen Rennison’s youthful and powerful lyrics coming from her fine soul voice. On her latest release, titled ‘I Do’, we find Rennison capturing the essence of having a sweet summer crush, and fused with her essential musicality, we end up with one very special piece of soulful R&B.

Vancouver-based, Colleen Rennison is a singer and a songwriter whose soaring voice stuns as much as her musical choices. On her latest release ‘I Do’, we find what can be described as two songs blended together, creating a dichotomy that I never knew I needed. One of those songs is the breezy, dreamy introduction. Warm, embracing, bright and upbeat, this part sees Rennison playfully blaming her crush for not giving her the attention she needs. The music is playful and cheerful, but weighted, thanks to Rennison’s heavy-weight phrasing skills and rich vocal texture. This part then gets interrupted by a freight train of experimentation that sees the song going through time changes, as well as an abrupt change in mood, with a sudden infusion of a healthy heft of melancholy, as the instrumentation picks up its pace behind the singer, creating a soulful orchestra of hard-hitting piano and drums that boldly mirror Rennison’s changing vocal dynamics. A stunning display of musicianship on the part of Colleen and her co-musicians.

‘I Do’ is a special release that showcases intricate skills from an artist who’s not scared of basically fooling you. Inviting you for a peppy summertime pop, before hitting you hard with some heavy music that you got in no way prepared for. Colleen Rennison easily stuns on ‘I Do’.
