Blackout by Napier Days

0

Armed with a catchy hook and a hypnotizing atmosphere, Napier Days’s second and latest single is a fine piece of introspective, electronically tinged alt-pop that’s easy on the senses while delivering a stark, dark message.

The Berlin-based Napier Days is a solo project, masterminded by the man himself, who plays all the instrumental tracks, does all the arrangements, and is on solo production duty, and the end result is clean and impressive on the technical front, compelling, and thought-provoking on the lyrical and musical fronts, Blackout is a song that’s simply easy to swallow, and easier still to love.

Perhaps the first noteworthy element of this song is the Napier Days’s voice itself. The spoken, husky quality of the singing voice makes it very easy to grasp and relate to the deep and rich lyrics, which revolve around the doubt that can easily arise around one’s own memory and ability to remember things, a doubt that can end up causing major distortion to the events of one’s life, or create an illusion that they can keep feeding and living in, an admittedly dark topic that never crossed mind in such a profound way, and it greatly helps that the musical atmosphere Napier Days build around it perfectly fits the narrative.

An emotionally charged piece of songwriting, with melancholic chord progressions, and clear melodic motifs in a minor key, the electronic direction of the product helps in amplifying a sense of dissociation from reality that can easily fit the lyrical content, making this entire song function as a single musical and lyrical entity, with cohesion, and precision.

Blackout is only the second single for Napier Days, a musical talent that should not be looked over. Keeping this standard of quality consistent throughout his output will guarantee him a solid fan base that will impatiently wait for his every release, just if he manages to beat the perfectionist that he admits resides within him. A thought-provoking and beautiful, dark release, from an up-and-coming talent.

Bazaar by Gerasimos Papadopoulos

0

The latest release from the band “Ferah” was composed for them by the great composer Gerasimos Papadopoulos who wanted to capture the wandering feeling of the protagonist of the Fairytale called “Zahrenia”. This part of the fairytale has the protagonist wandering in an oriental bazaar, and hence the track was named “Bazaar” and the song is indeed very oriental. The oud, which is beautifully played by Mr. Papadopoulos himself, signifies that this whole 2-minute track and the feeling associated with it are in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and pertaining to the eastern Mediterranean region in general. It’s amazing how a sound that’s made this well and this rich can transfer you to a specific location and its associated culture. Despite the short duration of the piece, I felt like I was strolling through an ethnic bazaar and shopping for local goods in Athens or Istanbul, because of how well the string instruments and the arrangement are put together. It’s all thanks to the undeniable efforts of Achilleas Tigas, on the ney, Stefanos Agiopoulos, with the oriental and ethnic percussions, and Thomas

Meleteas, with his contrabass. If I heard this track in the middle of a Spotify or YouTube mix I would never think it’s a modern piece of music and I would think it’s a classic piece with those Byzantine and Ottoman vibes. Last but not least, the fairytale from which the track is taken doesn’t have to be experienced completely for you to have the oriental bazaar feeling of this track, which makes it able to exist on its own as a soundtrack or standalone piece which serves its purpose more than well and delivers its promise magically.

Funk You by ndge

0

When you feel betrayed, you’d imagine throwing a grenade on those who hurt you to feel better, but ndge has a superior revenge approach, which is his uplifting single, “Funk You.” It’s the kind of song you’d send to someone who had mistreated you, right before blocking them.

ndge is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from the United Kingdom who combines Funk and Pop with electronic elements to create a groovy soundscape that carries a relatable sensation and makes you vibe along.

“Funk You” is a valiant take that depicts what could be said while ending any kind of relationship on bad terms. It’s the angry letter you write, but never dare to send. ndge, on the other hand, is bold enough to do so; he wrote bold lyricism and chose a stylish execution to sound more carefree as if expressing oneself removed the burden and made everything lighter and brighter.

The single is driven by a poppy piano and a kicky bassline, which help the listener loosen up a bit. The quirky rhythm is structured to be catchy and daring, which fits the content well. ndge’s vocals make the hateful lyrics amusing. His voice dances with the instruments and conveys aversion and rage in a funky manner.

To make the experience whole, ndge shares his vision and talents with all of your senses. The colorfully glitched, artistic music video reflects the song’s character, and there’s such a good union between the sound and the visuals that it feels integrated.

All the elements of the track work together to create a vibrant atmosphere. And that’s only the artist’s debut single, so stay tuned to see how ndge can top his plucky start with his following releases.

Drive Alone by Carson Ferris

0

Drive Alone is a drop-dead gorgeous, driving, minimalistic ballad that’s far deeper than how it seems at first glance.

From the beautiful city of Provo, Utah, Carson Ferris is just twelve years old, and already with a blossoming music career that seems to be on a steady upwards trajectory. Having started his guitar playing at six years old, and having been singing since he started to speak, Carson seems to be destined to make music, and when you take to listen to his latest single, titled Drive Alone, and read the little story behind it, you’ll easily be able to identify that you are in presence of a budding talent.

Drive Alone is an emotional, driving pop ballad, with bittersweet progressions, and passionate melodies. Carson’s heartfelt delivery and vocalizing are fresh and inventive, and they showcase his talent. The production is a steady support system for Carson’s sound, sounding tight, controlled, neat, and concise, and with a fair share of adventure in terms of synth sounds, and how the one-progression composition was utilized to serve song sections that sound completely different. Drive alone has a deceptive depth to its composition and arrangement.

A song about finding one’s own road in life, being in full control of where one wants to be, and exactly how they reach that destination, Drive Alone is a beautiful pop ballad with tight beats, sweet melodies, and a compelling sound that calls for endless repeats.

Follow the Christmas Light by Avalight

0

People love Christmas because it brings warmth and delight within, but sadly, as we grow older, the magical taste of Christmas fades. Through their heartwarming debut single, “Follow the Christmas Light,” Avalight evokes the nostalgic, intimate memories we have from when we were young and our hearts were filled with the Christmas spark.

Avalight is a four-piece band that is as miraculous as Christmas. They bring different musical influences, diverse vocal ranges, and even dissimilar age stages, weaving one piece that oozes with their characterized sonic landscape. Maxima (16), Malizia (18), Susann (34), and Saeed (59) make up the band Avalight, and they are ready to embark on the music industry and bring something extraordinary!

“Follow the Christmas Light” carries a very homey vibe. It effortlessly takes one on a walk through their happy memory passages as they draw a peaceful scene where Christmas brought all family and friends together, shone on any darkness, and lit the place with love and laughter.

“It’s time to remember when we were small; we had a pure heart, with love for all.”

This lyric resembles the message that the song aims to deliver and succeeds in doing so. Whatever season we are in, all of the elements contribute to an atmosphere of joy that evokes a Christmassy spirit. The quartet’s chemistry suggests that they’re one big family having a good time singing a Christmas carol that melts the ice from a cold evening.

The single opens with lighthearted bills and dreamy keys, and soon as other instruments join, an orchestral flair soars. The entire composition builds a euphoric, festive mood. It demonstrates their exceptional musicianship, where they pour out their hearts and souls while juggling genres and presenting their own sound.

The range-pitched vocals harmonize together seamlessly and give a majestic feel. Each singer has a unique timbre that makes their performance luring and solid. Their storytelling certainly urges the listener to feel young with a serene, pleasant mind, waiting for Santa, opening the presents, and having lots of cozy hugs, all while singing along with them.

This is only the beginning! Avalight is just warming up, and more sophisticated music with its blended sound and ravishing spirit will follow. So keep an eye on their social media!

Pricelless by Proklaim

0

Rappers who deliver slaying performances but are poor lyricists, in my opinion, have songs that are hollow and could only work well as danceable material. Rappers like Proklaim, on the other hand, are what give Hip-Hop its profundity and make it maintain the art of the street soul, which offers to be a voice for others.

The Namibia-based rapper Proklaim began his musical journey right after he finished college, drawing influences from legends like Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Big Pu, Nas, and Lauryn Hill. He is such a priceless artist who pays attention to each component of his tracks, especially the deep, introspective lyrics, and that’s why it suits him best to craft a single titled “Priceless.”

“Priceless” is the track that Proklaim chose to end the year with, precisely on Christmas. It’s an easygoing, melodic tune with a solid rapping performance. The neo-trap number conveys the mind of a dreamer with reflective lyricism. With only the chorus lyric “I just wanna make my way,” the artist captures what most ambitious people want, and he keeps up the same pace with understandable yet clever lyrical content.

The beats are smooth to complement the bars and the tightly packed delivery. Proklaim’s powerful writing is his trademark, but he also sings with a natural flow bar after bar with an incredible grasp; he controls his breath well and knows when to sound dreamy and when to sound savage.

It’s priceless to see yourself walking the path you dreamed of, and “Priceless” below soulfully illustrates this journey. If you’re a rap fan, you’ll definitely choose this track to walk the road with you.

Life Soaked Reveal (feat. Ben Tenison) by Genevieve Sovereign

0

Genevieve Sovereign based in Melbourne, Australia, releases yet again another emotional and passionate song as a part of her series of collaborations that she continues to create with artist Ben Tenison. On the 25th of December, they released a beautiful and sensational track called ‘Life soaked reveal’; a magical electronic track that is dedicated to their late producer and friend Luke Paulding. Genevieve mentions that Luke is the one who helped set the path to her musical career and journey to becoming the great independent artist she is, and she felt the need to create a song that explains how she feels about this human connection.

The song is a bunch of tingling sensations that will fill up your body and soul; you can feel the passion, emotion, and sadness somehow. We feel like, although the song is for a sorrowful cause, it still is embellished with beautiful and angelic vibes that are just shining through the soul of Luke. The overall sound is ethereal and mellow. The musical arrangements are rich and complex, with a magical and light electronic soundscape like fairies dancing on the beat. You will also feel a hint of the electronic sound of the early 2010s. The track has a stretch of xylophone and what seems to be piano sound effects that give a very fantasy-like feel. The instruments and sounds feel like they are rippling through the dimension. There is also some bass that gives an edgy vibe. The vocals of Genevieve are angelic and high-pitched in such a way that makes you feel the intensity of her emotional status. Ben’s voice is deep and mesmerizing. You cannot miss listening to this song because it’s a truly golden dedication to somebody you may have lost.

EP: Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse by Meadow Argus

0

Australian psychedelic folk-rock outfit Meadow Argus announced the release of their upcoming EP “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” on Friday the 13th of January.

“Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” is Meadow Argus’s debut release, written and recorded in 2021 during the covid pandemic lockdown, and the songs on this 7-track EP all revolve around various personal issues that happened during the lockdown disruption.

The EP prominently features synths of different shapes and colors, acoustic guitars, electric ones, and even strings. “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” almost sounds like the slow psychedelic ambiance of indie bands like Cigarettes After Sex or Beach House but taken up a notch.. or two.. or three notches.

The seven tracks on “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” sound like a collection of influences that fuse together and each track is distilled into its own unique form and personality on this esoteric journey as a listener goes through each one.

Another contributing factor for why each track has its own personality is that each one literally features a different personality! There’s a total of six vocalists on “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” (at least the ones I could count), which makes every track unique and fresh, going from one to the next.

Jevan Cole is the creative mastermind behind the project, and his multi-instrumental and production work on “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” is what ties all of the tracks together, as he composed, recorded, mixed, and mastered the entirety of “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” in his home studio, with the help of Seamus Kirkpatrick.

My personal favorite tracks “Tiny Flames”, “Sleep” and “Dance With Me” from the EP highlight the versatility of Meadow Argus, and it’s exciting to hear what creative avenues this new outfit is willing to explore in the future.

Last Night In Lisboa by MARS VALENCIA

0

Artist Mars Valencia will swoop you away with his smooth and cascading tunes in his latest song ‘ Last night in Lisboa’, a track he made after discovering the city for 4 days before making the song. Based in London, UK, Mars released this song on the 6th of January after a very difficult EP called ‘forgive me’ that is the opposite of what this new song promotes about Valencia: Self-confidence. He is influenced by artists like Don Toliver, The Weeknd, and 6lack. Also, wait for a music video to accompany the song.

The song is highly magnetic with its slow R&B soundscape that lets you taste each part of the beat to the minuscule detail. The musical arrangement is definitely euphoric and pleasing to the ears. The song is basically a reflection of where Valencia is in his life. The overall sound of the song is hazy and sensual with a lot of raw emotions and hardcore meaning. The frequency is high and the bass is low and deep. Smooth and wavey, Mars really spits bars from the heart with cutting-edge rhymes. The vocals are light, straightforward, and very passionate. This song is perfect for an after-midnight vibe with moody lighting.
