Album: Klein and Jamison Sonatas for Alto Saxophone and Piano by KLEIN & JAMISON

0

Modern classical music is truly a severely overlooked sector of the musical landscape that surrounds us. From among stunning acts that keep on releasing seriously good, sensible, and pulling classically inspired compositions, like Bremer/McCoy and Matthew Halsall and his Gondwana Orchestra, we introduce to you today another pair of sublime musicians, Ian Jamison and Jim Klein, and their newest release, a collection of sonatas composed for the alto saxophone and the piano.

Based partly in Colorado and Arizona, the duo’s latest release is a pair of sonatas, each cut into 3 movements, and each loaded with its own twists, turns, and melodic and harmonic adventures, but both intricate, immersive, and performed with exceeding elegance by Andrew Dahlke and Juhyun Lee. The compositional style of Klein and Jamison is approachable, yet not devoid of the occasional streak of melodic or rhythmic madness, but it is almost always done in a completely controlled fashion, giving those moments of dynamism a flair of virtuosity. Regardless of the moments of high intensity, the remainder of the music’s runtime is tastefully rich with intertwining melodies between the saxophone and the piano, and interesting harmonic choices that range from emotional to inquisitive

All in all, both sonatas on this release are exquisitely composed. Lush, thoughtful, emotive, and beautifully played. The interlocking parts are stimulating, and the timbres of the instruments perfectly fit together. This is a pair of nuanced classical compositions that are equally soothing and exciting.

Album: An Alien Among Us by MADEBIT

0

What you can expect on Madebit’s latest album is some of the best crafted, and best put-together bits of alternative and electronic pop that you’ve heard all year long. It is introducing an all-new sound that will eventually be synonymous with the artist, with all its electrifying energy, retrofitted/futuristic noir disco vibes, and impassioned vocal deliveries from one of the year’s finest discoveries.

From the album’s first moments, Madebit announces the bold sound of the album as one constructed purely from one layer of synthesizer on top of another, and from a vocal layer on top of another. A sound that relinquishes a bit of melodic direction in favor of constructing compelling and hypnotically immersive textural landscapes that quickly start resembling an outer space disco, fitting to the album’s name and theme, “An Alien Among Us”. The Nashville, Tennessee-based artist Madelyn Reyes, aka Madebit, states that she was inspired by the crazy artists who “stand at the helm of their recordings..”, and indeed, one can catch the influence of such beloved crazies like St. Vincent, David Byrne, Depeche Mode, and Duran Duran throughout the album’s 12 songs, many of which are clear standouts.

While the sound that this album heralds might be deemed a little out of focus for some listeners, and a little over-ornamented for others, we should not forget for a moment that this album, and Madebit by extension, rewards exploration, and experimentation generously. A lot of the songs on the album are made dense and complex by choice and are proudly so. Among those is the album’s single ‘A Sound is Born’. Effortlessly carrying over the album’s experimental, alien disco atmosphere, this song comes filled with layers of warbling synths that often clash in the song’s busy tapestry. But the heartful vocal delivery of Madebit’s thoughtful lyrics about taking long shots keeps things tightly knit together until an extremely busy coda takes over with dozens of dancing synths. ‘Persimmon Spritz’ off the album’s later half is another bold number that utilizes sample clutter to craft an intricate construct that features melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic trickery at every nook and cranny. While a difficult song to sit on and make immediate sense of, there is enough charm and pop appeal to keep you hooked throughout. The retro disco sounds of ‘I Wanna Get Away’ were refreshing and the straightforwardness was unusual at this point so close to the album’s end. Using synths that resemble strings, warping vocal samples for numerous effects, and a tight, hasty groove, the song boasts a Latin vibe with an alien twist.

From the album’s first half, we have the starter ‘Space’ as a clear standout. One of the albums’ more chill atmospheres, featuring one of the album’s most memorable vocal parts and lyrics. The chill sound of the song showcases Reyes’s talents as a songwriter who is able to craft a solid chord sequence and back it up with a beautiful melody. I’d love to hear an acoustic rendition of ‘Space’. I bet it would offer such spicy contrast from the album’s upbeat version. The sophomore track, the titular “An Alien Among Us”, is another immediately catchy stunner. With the singer’s very unique delivery on top of the atmosphere that has started to become denser and more saturated with synthpop clutter, we have a peppy banger that is not as experimental as cuts that will come later in the album, but still dense enough to be an introduction to the sound of Madebit.

Madebit’s debut full-length album comes chock-full of detail and nuance. Layers upon layers of instrumental and synthesized layers of music. From the Intermission’s introduction of a refreshingly organic stringed instrument (I want to say a koto or a shamisen, but I could be wrong), to the faux-Latin vibes of I Wanna Get Away’, and from the Perceived simplicity of the aptly titled starter ‘Space’, to the fearlessly messy and cool ‘Moon Dance’, Madebit infuses every section on ‘An Alien Among Us’ with character and a wholly-new brand that is thoroughly refreshing to dive into.

We Call It JUNK by Junk

0

San Diego based musical trio JUNK are once again at it, after many a feedback about their style and genre, which remains catchy yet cryptic and not designed to be put confined in one box…JUNK released a single titled “We Call It JUNK”…because that is the genre, that is the style, that is the mood and energy that they define as their genre…it’s called junk!

The musical trio that makes up JUNK are…

Master Bassist and composer Aaron “Dubl A” Seener from Long Island NY

Saxophonist and lyricist Dale “Dirty D” Pearson

Guitarist and Vocalist Nik “Anthem” Mathews from San Diego CA

The 3 people got together to release the genre defining single “We Call It Junk”…

This song is…like nothing you’ve heard before…it’s been described many times, one of which was the description that the band members actually thought of…and it was something like this “It’s like a classical music composition….but set to a hard beat!!”

…and that is a very wild but pretty effective description…

When I first heard “We Call It Junk” I felt like I was watching a movie with inter-dimensional travel and the hero keeps falling from one portal into another, from dimension to another and the world all collided and collapsed on each other, creating something that has never been experienced before.

JUNK created this genre bending and genre fusing experience based on a hip-hop foundation, with vocals flows flying off and hard beats blasting the speakers…with classical elements of cellos and violins…with a brass section and a saxophone solo…and vocal choirs…with afro beats thrown in the middle of the percussive elements.

…whatever you think of, you’ll find it here in this inter-dimensional musical experience.

We wish JUNK all the best in life and we can’t wait to hear what they have next for the world…but we’re sure it’s going to be out of the box…and out of this world.

Paradigm by FRANCES HOPE

0

Frances Hope just released a new single titled “Paradigm”…a soft rock, indie ballad that has more life and soul than most of what I’ve heard this year.

The heart that has been put in “Paradigm” is mesmerizing.

The emotional vocals act as our guide through the upbeat rock ballad…and these vocal melodies, are perfect, especially the oohs and aahs…this could be one of the best oohs and aahs melodies I’ve heard in so long.

…guitars strumming away…with a very strong indie soul…

…drums moving the energy forward in a bit of an upbeat direction…

…and the song doesn’t start from a high point like it ends on…actually, it starts with a very mellow piano and vocals intro…and takes you bit by bit, introducing the drums and the beats…and goes from there to the highest points of the emotional spectrum, where the heartfelt vocal melodies guide us through this journey.

This musical group that managed to capture our hearts includes a singer-songwriter, a talented producer, a Grammy-winning drummer, and a producer…Frances joined forces with Ron Thaler (drums for “No One” by Alicia Keys” and the likes of Lana Del Rey, David Guetta, and more) and producer Neil James Cooke-Dallin to create an alt-rock anthem that was inspired by Florence the Machine, Lana Del Rey, and Birdy).

…and let’s share the absolutely awesome credits that need to have light shed on them…

Vocals and lyrics by Frances Hope

Music and arrangement by Frances Hope, Neil James Cooke-Dallin

Drums, percussion, and Creative Consultation by Ron Thaler

Guitar, bass production, and audio engineering by Neil James Cooke-Dallin

Additional Production by Ron Thaler

Cello by Amy Houston

Piano by Nate “Little Miami” Cummins

Additional keys by Ron Thaler

Mastered by Brock McFarlane

…the result is a mesmerizing indie rock anthem that will keep repeating in your head for hours, days…maybe weeks.

This is a highly recommended musical and emotional experience for any music lover.

Wishing all the best to Frances and the team, your pure art deserves to be heard everywhere.

Cheers!

John Hughes Movie by MAJESKA

0

Mixing between the new and the old…the nostalgic and the futuristic…this artistic contrast always caught my heart…especially when it’s done artfully and emotionally with heart…this is exactly what Majeska managed to create with the new single “John Hughes Movie”.

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Majeska created his journey of a song along with producer Jared Corder, mastering engineer Edsel Holden and recorded it at the Polychrome Ranch Studio.

“John Hughes Movie” is the description of a love story, according to Majeska…this is how she describes it…

The musical experience in Majeska’s latest single is very nostalgic, taking us back in time to the 80s…

You know what, it would actually feel right at home in ‘Stranger Things’…yes, that’s it…the neon buzz, the VHS tape effects…” John Hughes Movie” is a love letter to the 80s.

But not everything is a throwback to the 80s…the song has very modern elements that could even be described as futuristic…of course evident in the sound quality, very lush soundscapes, and the absence of an in-your-face drum/beat section…the song is on the subtle side…no hard beats, it’s more of an ambient percussive experience…far away, effective, but far…more of a cinematic usage of the percussive elements.

The experience that Majesk presents with her latest single “John Hughes Movie” is a very laid back, chill, and relaxing experience…a very much needed experience, especially during the time we live in.

Majeska, we wish you all the best in life, we can’t wait to see what you bring to the world next…but we’re sure it’s going to be an absolutely smashing experience.

Cheers!

Transmission by M. CROSS DOUGHERTY

0

Cross Dougherty, the North Carolinian producer and multi-instrumentalist just released his latest single “Transmission”…a dreamy synth ambient journey through mesmerizing sonic landscapes…

The synth world that Dougherty crafted with his synthesizers is a very well-built realm, a realm of evolving musical experiences.

“Transmission” is also a mantra, a trance in which the listener goes, to find himself in a very shiny and glimmering world, with passing clouds…moving slowly and changing their shapes as they go through their journey of self-evolution…

Dougherty wrote “Transmission” with a very specific mood and motive in mind, he wrote it as an homage to his father-in-law, Anthony Louis Acampora…and “Transmission” is the first part of four pieces for this homage…Acampora recently passed away after fighting fiercely with Parkinson’s and dementia for more than 10 years.

The whole emotional experience of “Transmission” is that of being lost, but moving forward, with some parts stuck in the past…but let’s keep going…and above all, it’s an open link, a connection between our worlds to always keep our loved ones near, even if they are far.

Dougherty, we wish you all the best in life, we can’t wait to hear about your next musical journey and get on board to experience the worlds you create with your music.

We’ll be on the lookout.

Cheers!

Topsy Turvy by NICHOLAS DANTE

0

An upcoming contender in the electro-pop world just released his latest single, an edgy and energetic ball of fire…

Nicholas Dante released “Topsy Turvey”…get ready for a very energetic electro-pop whirlwind that will sweep you off your feet.

Dante is based in New York, USA, he wrote “Topsy Turvey” during quarantine, where and when he was in a dark mood…but he took that dark energy and channeled it into this electro-pop energetic song that is sure to get the energy out of you and make you move.

The energy of “Topsy Turvey” is something that should be a club anthem that plays to get people going…it should be the official anthem at the beginning of the night, every night in the club.

The music has edgy synth riffs, blasting beats, and a solid percussive section, and the vocals carry all the rest of the blasting energy.

If you want to get your blood going, and you’re energy pumping, you should give Nicholas Dante’s latest single “Topsy Turvey” a go…right now.

We wish Dante all the best in life, he deserves it and much more.

The peppy and relatable singles of Cassidy Dickens return with the nice and warm brand-new release ‘Close to My Chest’.

Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Cassidy Dickens is a singer and songwriter whose country and Americana offerings are always warm and effervescent. With her serene and relaxing vocals, touching, simple compositions, and genial lyrics, Cassidy Dickens’s songs have always been easy to get into, but never easier than on her latest, ‘Close to My Chest’.

Keeping her feelings close to her chest, Dickens’s latest release is populated by sweet and percussive banjos, ukuleles, and a rhythm-keeping wooden click (origin unknown). The result is a sparse mix that leaves space for Cassidy’s beautifully layered vocals, and her charming lyrics. The immersive mix is also home to a stirring banjo solo that’s just to be expected. Particularly noteworthy are the well-calculated vocal harmonies. Showcasing Cassidy’s terrific control and taste, they single-handedly elevate the song to a whole different level of stirring goodness.

Beautifully written, sung, and produced, ‘Close to My Chest’ is enjoyable and touching. Playfully showcasing a detrimental problem that arises in our relationships, the singer keeps things light-hearted with her witty lyrics and charming deliveries in her showstopping new single, simple, breezy, and genuinely pretty.
