Drowning by Annie Anna

0

With her folky sound and smooth writing, singer/songwriter Annie Anna is back with her single Drowning. A “fierce portrayal of the suffocating experience of being under the control of another” as described by Annie, Drowning is one of those tunes that gets straight to your on-repeat playlist from the first listen, let me tell you more about it.

Annie Anna opens Drowning softly with warm arpeggios and her soothing mellow vocals. Slowly and wisely Anna started adding subtle groovy layers to her flow, giving her sound a dynamic push while keeping her deep emotional essence alive. Drowning has a light dreamy sound with an extremely fluid structure, Annie Anna‘s melodies and vocal harmonies all go together with a simple powerful arrangement like a stream of melodies and genuine emotions that hits straight to the listeners’ hearts, creating a bond that’s not easily broken between them and the artist. Annie Anna‘s mix of acoustic and electric guitars created an atmospheric layer that reflected the song’s storytelling vibes and with the subtle keys and grooving percussions, a solid dynamic structure was slowly created with a catchy sound that made me play it over and over.

Drowning is a demonstration of Annie Anna‘s laid-back, chill writing and how she steers her elements to get to the desired feeling and channel the most perfect emotion. It shows her character and well-knowledge of her direction and sound. Looking forward to more from Annie Anna, keep on rocking. Cheers!

Jackie O Lake by Petra Jasmiina

0

At a certain point, everything around us and inside us might get very dark, and at such a time, we need someone or something to ignite a spark that can pull us out. Petra Jasmiina’s optimistic yet realistic anthem “Jackie O Lake” works as a fine lifeline made of ambition, satisfaction, and persistence.

“Jackie O Lake” is like a sonic autobiography of the Finnish-born and New York-based singer-songwriter Petra Jasmiina. It’s poignant, smooth storytelling of how she left everything behind to follow her artistic passion and go to the city of dreams. It’s touching to know much about a person’s hopes and dreams through their music; however, what makes the song more soul-penetrating is how relatable it is to anyone who wants to go big and do what they live, sacrificing many things to get there, so if you haven’t reached your desired destination yet, Petra Jasmiina is telling you to “just wait, wait a little longer,” and you can’t doubt such an angelic voice! But if you did put your feet on the first steps, then you’ll feel the positive nostalgia in the song.

The soulful song is named after a reservoir in New York, and it matches the tune’s peaceful and breezy atmosphere best. Petra Jasmiina has an ethereal vocal line that sends a kind of assurance that every obstacle will pass someday. She sings sincerely, and you can sense how she believes in every lyric she’s singing through her light-hearted timbre. The instrumentation is mellow at first, giving the vocals all the light, then it progresses to a cinematic soundscape, with violinist Scott Tran playing a key role in that. The solo part is quite dreamy and bosting, and then the heat is all over the place.

There’s an obvious harmony between all the elements that makes the song appealing and heartfelt. The lyrics are like a painting that is being drawn in front of you, making you sit in front of the lake with serenity as your companion, and Petra Jasmiina’s voice is the gentle brush that’s making the painting with pleasure and a splash of pain, while the composition is adding the nuances here and there to make the painting authentically polished.

There is music that finds us, and there is music that we find ourselves in; “Jackie O Lake” below is both!

My Favorite Song by Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends

The return of the Swedish, cheekily-named Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is a piece of immaculate, groovy, vintage-inspired pop-funk that aims for a 70s sound and succeeds with flying colors.

Based in Stockholm, Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends is the solo project of singer and songwriter Arne Floryd, part of the Swedish band Redmoon. This project launched in the summer of 2020 and has since released a full-length album and a healthy handful of singles. With a high standard of quality and professional attention to detail, Arne’s music has been consistently successful in delivering precious musical moments that vary from the rocking to the grooving, and all the way to the funky, and his latest single, titled My Favorite Song, leans a little towards the funky end of the spectrum.

Going for a 70s disco sound, a-la Chic or ABBA, the rich violins in the background, or the lush, blaring horns in the forefront of the arrangement both add terrific depth to the atmospheres of this thoughtful piece of music. The lyrics talk about how life can be pretty tough, but still retain beauty in its small things, like Arne’s favorite song playing on the radio. The sweet words mixed with the funk guitar and the immaculate drum groove courtesy of Andreas Quincy Dahlback, all add up for an end result that’s cheerful, upbeat, and with a delicious, prominent hint of retro funk.

Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends’ latest song is a beautiful bit for an early summer fit of nostalgia, and just like everything they’ve been delivering for close to three years now, it’s a solid and endlessly replayable piece of good music.

Somebody by KØASH

0

In the present day, almost everything feels like a race. We need to get things done fast, and we’re done with them even faster. This is actually sad, especially that many deal with relationships with this mindset, which makes humans stop searching for love and accept fleeting relationships for the sake of pleasure. With an uplifting beat, groovy blended sound, and sentimental vocals, KØASH conveys this current scene in his track, “Somebody.”

The fresh release, “Somebody,” depicts a love-themed universal situation, which is why it will easily appeal to whoever listens to it. But not just because most people will relate to the lyrical content but also because of the obvious musicianship of Dean Koash, aka KØASH.

With the upbeat synth-driven single, there’s a color vibe in the air that urges you to hype up. KØASH’s dulcet vocals smoothly strike a balance between the vibrancy of the rhythms and the soulful complexity of the mixed emotions in the lyrics. The catchy chorus will make you sing along while dancing to the charged sound.

In a flawless manner, the artist manages to gather different tastes, like melancholia and optimism, desire and self-control, and contemporary and nostalgic. You’ll find yourself seamlessly blending into this mix and enjoying its richness.

Well, the need to meet somebody may lead you to unneeded situationships, but the need to listen to feel-good, relatable, and creative pop will lead you here, to KØASH’s music.

Seven In The Morning by Birds are better

“Seven In The Morning” by Birds Are Better is a track that made time stop for me once I listened to it. The simplicity of the guitar composition makes everything more intimate and more touching.

The vocals are sung in a light and bright head voice most of the time, which fits perfectly with the narrative of the lyrics. The vocalist has a super clean tone and little to no nasality, which made the sound pure and gave him excellent emotional delivery.

As I followed that simple and easy chord progression on the acoustic guitar, I felt like the song took me away into a dream-like realm where I could stop thinking about everything else and just leave my mind to the music to be hypnotized by it.

But it doesn’t just stop there, the parts with the humming are followed by a string arrangement that reaches right into your soul as you listen to it. You can’t really think of it as a break or interlude, but more like an ascension to a soft crescendo, unlike any other one I’ve heard before.

If you ever told me that a track would try to merge the styles of Simon & Garfunkel and A-Ha then it would seem like a far stretch, but Birds Are Better took this combo of styles and birthed out of it a beautiful song with some of the most incredible emotional deliver you will ever come across.

Love Goddess by Maijah

If I told you the term “Main character music” you would probably think I’m talking about the soundtracks of movies like Drive or American Psycho or one of those”literally me” blockbusters. But what we have here today is a very heartfelt song that the artist just happens to dub “main character music due to its relatable and insightful lyrical theme: loving the wrong people with the wrong amounts of love.

“Love Goddess” by Maijah is a track I listened to without knowing what to expect, and I’m super glad I did. The track begins with a soft acoustic guitar playing a heartwarming progression along a soft string arrangement and some ambient sounds. The moment Maijah begins singing I feel like her voice belongs to each and every genre I know, but also none of them. She has enough open vowels to classify as a pop singer, but the twang she uses and the agility she has flipping from chest to head voice and vice versa made me feel like she’s just a siren who inherited these god-like singing abilities. We have to appreciate the way her vocals are mixed in this too, especially the background harmonies and layers that work like magic while still keeping it simple. Maijah has every right to call herself the goddess of singing at this point, not just love.

Now to the song’s most charming aspect: the lyrics. When you have a song written in first person that acknowledges one’s weaknesses and defects then you know it will probably be great. When you have lyrics that flesh out this narrative into simple words that we use in everyday conversation and small talk as well, then you have a song that’s bound to make more than ninety percent of people relate to it. Take for instance the bridge where she sings:

“Finding myself through the love I give others

Showing my heart my devotion

Witnessing depth I have left to discover

Letting myself be an ocean…”

And the chorus is even better, but I won’t spoil it for you.

All in all, this is a song that touches down on so many personal and intimate matters that are sung delicately and has a simple-yet-charming chord progression that shows the power of the vocal lines. With the ocean metaphors, the ambient wave sounds, and the harmonies stacked in layers you will find yourself charmed and in love at first listen to “Love Goddess”.

Something for the Weekend by Nick Kandler

Dropping his second release of the year, Nick Kandler is on a roll of sweet, peppy, and summery pop tunes. His latest offering, a single titled Something for the Weekend is a soulful piece of bubbly pop that leaves a pretty aftertaste.

Based in Los Angeles, Nick Kandler is an artist, writer, and producer whose sound in his latest release is catchy and laid back. Something for the Weekend is built upon a steady groove from nicely mixed-in trap drums, an effervescent instrumental arrangement that pops with color. The twangy, chorused guitars are unforgettable, and the warm, creamy pads are soft and pillowy. Nick’s vocal performance is also dynamic and melodic, moving from the lower registers to the higher ones effortlessly, creating a vocal line that’s rich and fitting to the warmth of the piece.

Something for the Weekend is another winner from Nick Kandler. Quickly growing to become one of indie music’s best-known names, Kandler’s music has a relatable quality that makes it easy to enjoy and love. Something for the Weekend easily falls in the same category.

Back & Forth by Illuzions

Miami summer vibes…

Sun setting after a long day…

Night life is waking up…

Illuzions brings us “Back & Forth”, a Miami-infused dark dance electro-pop song made with love and excellent vibes.

“Back & Forth” is actually a single from Illuzions’ upcoming EP “Unsound Desires”…and by experiencing what they’re doing with their music, it’s definitely going to be on fire and we can’t wait to experience the upcoming EP.

“Back & Forth” starts out hot, with the beat going pretty strong, hi-hats already dancing its way through the intro verses….coupled with silky vocals and a subtle breakdown with a focus on the vocals…it builds up from there to take you to the highest of highs…

The song has a very strong hypnotic feeling to it, it’s not that it’s downbeat…actually quite the opposite…but the nature of the sounds and vocals are very relaxing in a way that it opens up your heart to the beat…it makes the connection to the song’s energy more palpable.

“Back & Forth” is the kind of song that you’d put on repeat and obsess over its vibes…it’s really all about that, it puts you in the mood to feel good and keep living in that mood for its duration of 3 minutes…

…speaking of connection, let’s get to know the people behind Illuzions…

This project is the brainchild of Bayla G and Felium the co-founders, of an audiovisual electronic pop duo.

It is a must listen especially during the hot summer that we’re living in, it is the experience we need.

We wish the brilliant duo of Illuzions the best in life, they definitely deserve it and a lot more.

Cheers!

Oceans Apart by Fran Lusty

Digging into the obstacles and hardships long-distance relationships face, indie-folk singer/songwriter Fran Lusty dropped her latest single Oceans Apart. Released on the 28th of April 2023, Oceans Apart takes us on an emotional journey that hits deep. Let me tell you more about it.

With voice and melodies from the magic land where Alanis and Dolores came from, Fran Lusty opened Oceans Apart and she instantly won me. Fran Lusty created a smooth fluid structure that’s dynamically led by her warm vocal melody while arranging her rock and folk influences in perfect harmony. She cleverly used all her elements in producing a dreamy multi-layered sound, that’s connected in a stream of melodies that keeps the listener hooked and entertained while channeling loads of deep emotions with its soft dynamic shifts and bright tone.

Oceans Apart sends a subtle sense of nostalgia to 90s and 2000s alternative fans like myself, as its folky core is covered in alternative influences that were cleverly handled by Fran Lusty, as she doesn’t “sound” like anyone but herself. She shows a good sense of melody and well knowledge of her sound and direction as she steered her sound, creating something fresh and new. Looking forward to more from Fran Lusty, keep on rocking. Cheers!

kill me slowly by deeprest

What makes a track distinct amidst many others is how organic it sounds, how well-crafted it is, whether it’s made to express or sell, and, for a special bond, how personal it is. At least that’s what I think. That’s why deeprest is a genuine artist; he knows how to highlight his musical prowess, sounding like no one else, and he uses introspective, relatable themes that the listener can see themselves in.

“kill me slowly” is the Denver-based artist’s latest release and the reason why I established the opinion above about deeprest. Even before I listened to the song, I admired his creative stage name, and this was the first indicator that I’m in awe of this inventive musician. After listening to the track, I instantly saw how the name is well-suited to his sound and signature.

The 2:17-minute single carries an interesting pack of genres more than you can imagine; it’s a hip-hop track that fuses in its layers pop, rock, psychedelic, post-punk, and emo with a retro yet futuristic execution. So whatever your bias is, you’ll appreciate this work’s smooth sensitivity.

The vocals convey the complex emotion in the lyricism, of the genre verity, and offer their own hard-hitting attitude. It goes well with the instrumentation, especially the straightforward percussion and the spooky synth line. On the other hand, I find the lyrics thought-provoking; they have a sense of carefreeness and freedom yet a propensity for nihilism. Either way, I know that many will find them reflective of some thoughts in their depths.

deeprest is drawing his own vibe and inviting you to enjoy his equally energetic and edgy musicality. Be ready to feel a little exposed and to sway with the flow.
