A release of solid gold from this Gold Coast singer/songwriter that despite its short length, takes us on a healthy coming-of-age journey with pristine production, spectacular lyrics, and most importantly, dazzling vocal performances from a highly talented up-and-coming artist which is already turning heads, and creating a lot of anticipation.
Wish Somebody Told Her is the title of Georgia Hoareau’s long-anticipated debut EP. Georgia is an Australian whose brand of bedroom pop has been gathering a lot of attention with her previously released singles, sensible when you consider her mature lyrics that defy her age, and her songwriting which turns out songs that are at once relatable, dramatic, and incredibly catchy, and her voice which is quite simply sublime.
Composed of 5 short and sweet tracks, the EP kicks off on the right foot with the previously released GIRL. An introduction to Georgia’s rich lyrical themes that show amazing maturity, her sophisticated style of colorful, melancholic pop, her wide-reaching voice, and her masterful control over it. The clean production adds a ton of value to the already precious songwriting, so we find tight and punchy drums, imaginative and varied guitars, and a warm, rich mix that places all elements exactly where they belong, which are tropes that we’ll see are constants throughout the songs, lending this release a cohesive and solid sound that does not stop being exciting and well executed, regardless of the style, which also varies greatly throughout the songs. For example, the second song, In The End, is a slow burner that features lulled vocals from Georgia, in her most intimate and touching delivery on the album. The song eventually reaches a climax, but it comes in the shape of hypnotic clapped rhythms and a minimal, hazy arrangement that stuns with its simplicity and immediacy.
Oh Well compensates for the previous song’s lack of rocking drums by starting out with a powerful punk-pop intro. A jubilant and bright coming-of-age journey that features a charismatic and effortless performance from Georgia that remains composed while the whole arrangement jumps and dances all over the place behind her in a display of masterful restraint and efficiency that’s just so very cool. The bold and loud guitars are beautiful and playful, the drums are punchy and hard-hitting, and Georgia’s final acceptance of her growing up is heartwarming, and the abrupt ending leaves us high and dry, before rewarding us by making us at our lowest and wettest with 4 Minutes Away, my undisputed favorite track off the album. This song’s warm acoustic tendencies, airiness, the pure soul that Georgia displays in the chorus, which oozes with melancholy and character, along with the imaginative, melodic guitars, all contribute to making this song’s prolonged chorus one of the most rewarding musical passages, not only on the album but in my entire recent memory. An absolute showstopper.
Georgia Houreau’s debut did not disappoint. A short collection of songs written, performed, arranged, and produced to ridiculously high standards of quality. Georgia is extremely talented and quite frankly seems like a wholesome, cool person. I’d be on the lookout for much more from her, as her brand of pop is simply too beautiful, sophisticated, and in touch with reality.
