Mission of Love by Anton Commissaris

0

Anton Commissaris’s latest single has Munich more than what initially meets the eye, and that’s plenty enough already.

The Menlo Park native Anton Commissaris is a passionate jazz pianist whose music is warm and intimate and comfortingly old-times. His latest single, titled Mission of Love, is an exercise in making 1930s music in 2023, and this is achieved with ample and wholesome levels of humor and soul, making it never sound like a broken record or a repetition of something.

Our protagonist is a hopeless romantic, determined to leave a mark and impress a fair lady he has eyes on. The adventures he undertakes to do this make him fail over and over again, but he keeps returning back to his feet regardless, in a show of (a bit manic) dedication, that leaves us torn between rooting for the helpless guy, admiring him for his unerring devotion, or to root for the lady instead, wishing for her to be able to escape this humorous chase, as her pursuer seems a little too dedicated. The musical adventure is no less compelling or exciting. Particularly the punchy and masterful drums. The honky-Toni piano is colorful and sweet, and Anton’s voice is relatable, accessible, and has a very comforting character.

A sweet and simple offering from a masterful jazz pianist and composer. Full of humor and musical panache that’s sure to leave a smile on your face. Give Mission of Love a try and you’ll immediately add it to your jazz playlist.

Trouble by Jen Ash

0

The prolific singer-songwriter Jen Ash returns with a heartfelt single that’s incredibly compelling, neat, moving, and soulful.

Jen Ash, a Los Angeles-based artist, and a former basketballer turned musician, has been turning heads for quite some time now, with her catalog of music coming to the 200k listens to a milestone on Spotify quickly. Her latest single, titled Trouble, is a soulful display of vocal talent, along with rich musical choices that sound at once rich and dramatic, while being grounding and familiar, which display Jen as a capable, mature musician who deserves attention and admiration.

Trouble is dominated by a sparkly piano that plays a consistent, hypnotic 8th-note rhythm, sticking closely to the grandiose chord progression. The drums are hard-hitting. Slow, and spaced-out passages make these drums hit deep and lend them weight and power, which goes along with the minimal and foreboding sub-bass. Perhaps most notable in the arrangement is the sublime between Jen’s vocals and a juicy alto saxophone that does not let go of the song, playing almost throughout. Taking seeming full liberties, the saxophone largely mimics Jen’s vocal melodies but does more often than expected veer off and play some tasty and masterful licks and phrases that beautifully fill in the gaps with warmth and charisma, which perfectly compliments Jen’s vocal performance, which is fragmented and loaded with soul, which shows in the inflictions of her voice. The end result is dramatic and grand, full of detail and nuance, but never once sounds bloated or excessive, managing to remain tasteful and mature throughout.

Trouble is an exquisite single from a singer-songwriter who’s creating noteworthy ripples with her releases. Listening to Troubles makes it easy to see what the hype is all about. Jen’s style is compelling, her songwriting is relatable and exciting, and her voice is touching. I’ll be waiting for more from Jen Ash.

Genre-Agnostic Sydney St. Humain New EP // METADRAMATIC

0

St. Humain is a genre-agnostic artist based in Sydney, Australia. Born in Singapore, the musician’s colourful, multi-cultural upbringing infuses his sound with a vibrancy like no other. With his music built around honest and personal stories from his own life, his latest EP METADRAMATIC is like reading from his journal, as every song peels back a layer, revealing more and more.

The new EP follows his 2019 debut release, EMOTIONAL SAUNA which was released via Capitol Music Group’s Listen For Pleasure imprint. Taking inspiration from the likes of Dua Lipa, Charlie Puth and Post Malone, METADRAMATIC sees the artist heading towards an interesting intersection between pop, electronic and R&B. The seven-track release which is being distributed in partnership with Paris based artist accelerator Groover Obsessions, with mixing by fellow Sydneysider Simon Cohen (Justin Bieber, Troye Sivan, will.i.am) and mastering by Dale Becker (SZA, Jack Harlow, Doja Cat) in California.

METADRAMATIC is about the feelings we all face in our lives when it comes to relationships — with lovers, friends, and with yourself. It is about the internal conversations that we all have and that St. Humain has had through the past few years. The songwriter shares, “Things are usually more dramatic in our heads and I hope that each song is reflective of that inner drama.”

Focus track “Wanna Talk” is an upbeat pop song with groove, narrating a satirical take on social awkwardness, particularly when it comes to chatting up love interests. Highlighting a self-deprecating realism of how difficult talking to someone you have a thing for, the self-written and self-produced “Wanna Talk” ironically contrasts it with being completely comfortable performing on stage to thousands.

Hoping to inspire listeners to be true to their own feelings, St. Humain reveals, “I think it’s very cool to confess at least to yourself what you’re actually feeling. I think that gives you a level of freedom and helps you somehow gain confidence just to be yourself. And to identify the negative feelings too, I think that’s the first step on the way to overcoming them.”

St. Humain has garnered millions of streams for his music to date, as well as acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Live Nation’s Ones to Watch and Earmilk, to name a few. Accompanying the success of his music, St. Humain also runs his own apparel brand, Emotional Sauna. Named after his debut EP, the brand offers pieces that allow our minds to escape into an aesthetic. It’s pro escapism, by St. Humain: Each release has been paired with a line of apparel to compliment the unique “world” of that song. With limited runs and small batches that will never be reprinted, the musician is offering entirely exclusive pieces. With his undeniably unique creativity and profound artistry flowing through his veins, St. Humain is certain to turn heads this year with METADRAMATIC.

Fiji by Mat Vanstone

Vanstone & LNDN drip over Vancouver with new tech house track “FIJI”

DJ & electronic producer Mat Vanstone from Vancouver, Canada released a new tech house single “Fiji” featuring LNDN on the 16th of September of last year.

Matthew Vanstone (or just “Vanstone” on streaming platforms) is a rising veteran producer in the Canadian electronic scene. His brand of electronic house music is characterised by high, non-stop dance energy that would absolutely shake the concrete foundations of any club that plays it.

Vanstone’s track “Fiji” is a collaboration between him and another Canadian house music producer, Lynden Grosso, also known as LNDN. The track features deep techno bass and creative sampling of synths and oriental live instrument sounds. ELECTRONIC

The vocal samples that Vanstone and LNDN use throughout the track are super catchy, and instant hook. The vocals really elevate this otherwise great instrumental to the next level of superb energy and give it a really cool vibe as result.

“Fiji” has been played by multiple DJ’s worldwide like John Summit, James Hype, Dr. Fresch & Cloverdale, and even featured on Beatport’s Top 100 hype chart, going up to the top 10 for multiple months with absolutely no surprise. The track is superb and it completely deserves its placement in the top charts.

I’m excited to hear what else Vanstone comes with and looking forward to his next collaboration.

I Have Longed To Be Here by Nicki Wells

0

“I Have Longed To Be Here” is the latest single from Nicki Wells. It is an epic track that sounds like a movie score.

When she was writing it, Nicki was inspired by Indian and Bulgarian folk music which I thought was a weird mix at first, but then it grew on me.

The sound depends on strings and a single layer of vocals. This gives a chance for Nicki to showcase her abilities in hitting high notes for a long duration as if she is praying or singing with a choir.

In the song’s final moments, more vocal layers are added making it sound like an actual choir. It was a climactic, jaw-dropping, and eargasmic moment that I enjoyed so much.

Overall the track made me realize that Nicki was able to seamlessly sew these different influences together to make something that sounds like it could’ve been on the soundtrack of lord of the rings, but also a great singer-songwriter piece with a very catchy and memorable vocal line. I recommend it to people who love cinematic and epic-sounding pieces.

Rooting For My Baby by Kelsie Kimberlin

0

The amount of songs released in support of the Ukrainian cause in the past year has become out of control, and with good reason. But while there are a few artists riding the wave for publicity or trendiness, some others have approaches so unique and fresh that they demand immediate respect and attention, and Kelsie Kimberlin’s latest single is definitely among the latter.

Based in Washington DC, Kelsie Kimberlin is an American-Ukrainian artist. A singer-songwriter whose brand of radio-friendly pop is sweet and wholesome, with messages that aim to unite people regardless of any form of categorization, and this adds invaluable credibility to her latest song, released in the support of Ukraine during her enduring hardships. Conceived during a brutal raid that left thousands of Ukrainians without running water or electricity, Kelsie’s support comes in the form of a cover of -none other than- Miley Cyrus’s Rooting For My Baby. While nobody would call Rooting For My Baby a particularly cheerful song, still the lyrical themes are a stretch to associate with a humanitarian cause as pressing as support for Ukraine, and this is why Kelsie’s version is incredibly easy to digest.

Not taking it so seriously, Kelsie’s cover is well made. Passionately sung and beautifully produced, the minimal arrangements make way for Kelsie’s delivery to take center stage, effectively calling Ukraine, her native country, her baby, which is affectionate and sweet in a surprising manner. The beautiful cause and masterful execution leave us with what is essentially a brilliant cover of the original song, one that will be easy to enjoy regardless of time, but the deep inception story will forever add weight and value to this release, even when it’s being enjoyed only for its musical merits.

A solid cover in support of a dire cause made with a lightheartedness that aims to brighten the very dark times that the Ukrainians are living. Executed with mastery and efficiency, Kelsie Kimberlin’s Rooting For My Baby is a delightful listen at any time.
