Blue by Luna Kat

0

Luna Kat’s blue is a precious piece of bedroom pop that’s delicate, sensual, mystical, and quite gorgeous if you ask me.

Running a little short of 3 minutes long, this stunner from New York’s Luna Kat is a short small thing that’s full of meaning, honesty, and beauty. The chord progression that leads the musical atmosphere is Jazzy and with just enough spice to make it stick to the ear. The accompanying melody is perfectly fitting and plays quite flexibly around the intricate harmonic base.

Luna’s voice is a beautiful thing. At once it’s relatable and human, not needing to show off, she sings this song in, mostly, a gentle lull that chromatically descends. Simple, effective, sufficient. But she also displays stellar control at parts. Wait for her call-and-response choruses when she expertly jumps up and down in register, elegantly, and very easily too.

The arrangement is simple and is mostly based on airy synths and trap beats, and gentle guitar strums. The lyrics are beautiful and heartfelt. While most people think that the breakup of a romantic relationship is the worst thing, a special few realize that it’s actually the breakup of a close friendship that hurts the most. Luna Kat experienced this, and she’s beautifully recounting her experience in the most sincere way.

Blue is a dark color that’s also quite beautiful and easy on the eye. A ton of artists managed to see and utilize this over the years and Luna Kat has effortlessly added her name to this list. Her “blue” is easily stunning.

Aquarius by Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L

An artist coming from Brooklyn “Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L” creates crazy and dope performances fueled by his love for hip-hop and rap music. Because of his fondness for poetry, he began taking classes to enhance his skills and began his ongoing music career. Breon released a new single for the year called “Aquarius” which has a backstory of why the song is named after a horoscope.

The artist named the song “Aquarius” referring to the sign he always gets romantically involved with. He raps about his love for the Aquarius that was in his life trying to make it up to them. He explains that he is aware of the energy that passes from their bodies to them and that they can clearly connect their thoughts through them, which makes them compatible with one another.

The melodies are mellow yet it gives some hype that will get you tapping through the tunes, there is a clear bass line that hits you right into your core. The beats are lit and smoothly played with Breon’s style of singing.

Breon has great taste in making his music; he has that mellow sweet sound in his tunes and hits you with dope rhythmic beats. You can also listen to “Buggin,” “K.O.H,” “Glass,” “Protocol” and “Mr. Bright Eyes.” The artist is always known for a specific and unique sound, and Breon is out there making it happen with some great music.

Deb’s by The Wanton String Band

0

Do you ever find yourself craving some blazin’ fiddles? Well, same.

The Wanton String Band is a British collective of Folk artists who play dense renditions of traditional Celtic Folk, with overdriven fiddles and overblown percussions, or maybe a piece of murder folklore, to a face-melting synth-based backing. It’s all so exciting!

The band goes back to 2013, with roots extending even further backward. They have all been parts of Folk bands around the UK before forming The Wanton String Band, with one big concept in mind, turning these ancient Folk tunes all the way up to 11.

Deb’s is just that. A lengthy intro sets a haunting vibe with brooding cellos and melancholic mandolins, playing complementary melodies. The beat then kicks in, along with all the fiddles. What follows is nearly 5 minutes of musical fireworks. The fiddle melodies are fast-paced and momentous, doubling on the mandolins at times to an even bigger sound. The beats are solid and provide a perfectly steady backbone on which all of the talented instrumentalists do their magic.

This lengthy piece rocks hard on a traditional Celtic Folk base. A nice combo that’s executed to an astonishingly high standard. Come to think of it, this piece might be for more people than just those who find themselves craving blazin’ fiddles.

Album: So Far Gone by Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz

With loads of joined and solo releases up their sleeves, Northern Californian singer/songwriter Eric Anders, and southern Californian guitarist/composer Mark O’Bitz kept on with their strong alliance as they released their highly melodic 6 songs EP “So Far Gone” on the 22nd of August, 2022. “So Far Gone” is a diverse-sounding EP with different perspectives all knit together in an awesome form. Let me tell you more about it,

“So Far Gone” starts with the title track and it says a lot about Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz’s sound. It has a smooth dynamic progression that’s been slowly and professionally cooked. It starts as a classic western tune and kept on getting heavier with sound really pounding parts. “Above The Highest Of Spires” comes next with a more alternative direction and powerful open sound and catchy dynamics, I believe this sounds amazing when played live and can easily get a lot of fans’ engagement. Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz get more emotional as we head toward the middle of the EP on “Fantasyland”. It’s a beautifully crafted stream of fluid melodies that carries you once you push play, its powerful heartfelt melodies struck a chord, definitely one of my favorites off the EP. “Down To See” keeps with the deep emotional vibes adding a more psychedelic mood in a progressive form with the best guitar work so far. Reaching “Dirty Sun”, Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz’s songwriting gets beautifully interesting, I’m in love with their haunting guitar tone, smooth melodies, and interesting structures. Ending the record with the bluesy Hendrix-y “Hey Josephine”. 7:05 minutes of well-written and amazingly performed pure old-school blues rock with some remarkable guitar hero moments in the most perfect setting and groove.

“So Far Gone” is a rich musical experience led by Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz, their diverse sounds and floating everchanging melodies all mashed up to create a very unique unpredictable sound that I totally dig. Looking forward to more from Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz, keep on rocking guys, cheers!

Not at all worried by MEGAFON

0

A Scandinavian band made of two lovers, Marte Schau’s beautiful, soft voice, and Mikael Fleron’s elegant saxophone swoons. Hailing from Copenhagen, the duo has been together since ’99, but have been MEGAFON since ’08. Their sweet notion is that they are trying to be responsible humans, raise their kids well, and be decent people while making beautiful music that makes life easier for others.

Not At All Worried does exactly that. A slow-burning stunner that got my nerves to relax, in spite of me, while I listened to it in an anxious social setting, and for that alone, I’m grateful. Starting off with a chill, syrupy Caribbean rhythm and heavily processed layers of harmonizing voices, the singing then starts, sensual, calming, and relaxed. Marte’s voice has a natural quality that makes her singing sound incredibly soft and talk-like. Approachable, relatable, and easy on the ears. The next layer that hits deep is the deep sub-bass. A massive, cushiony layer of bass delivers the meat and potatoes of the emotive chord progression, below the playful, swaying vocal melody. The outro finishes a keys solo that might very well be a heavily processed Sax part. Short but chock full of delicate phrasing and tasty lines, it’s the cherry on top.

MEGAFON seems to make life simpler. They are not exactly waiting for a spotlight to bask in the glory of, not so keen on getting their music to go viral and all that. They are typical trendsetters playing it cool. Not At All Worried is a sweet piece of music, beautifully written and put together. it actually managed to get me to be not at all worried, but desperately wanting more.

Your Affect by Reue

0

Reue’s single, Your Affect, is a seven-and-a-half-minute-long behemoth that somehow managed to keep me listening through its runtime. In focus, too… my attention never seemed to run out. I’ll try to explain it, but I think it’s best if you give it a spin on your own.

Reue is Ethan Reue Berdofe. A Texan, born and raised in Austin, he’s a techno music producer who’s been exploring the ends of these ropes since a very young age, being called a prodigy by his peers. His impressive resume is packed with work with solo artists, bands, compositional pieces, and attendances at the Berklee College of Music. With his decision to make Reue his primary focus, he’s been growing this brand of his and is already headlining festivals across Texas. Your Affect is deceptively simple on paper. An instrumental techno piece that seemingly loops to oblivion, full of dirty, throbbing basslines, airy synths, and pounding beats, it seems like your average run-of-the-mill dance techno thing, until you notice one thing… it does not loop to oblivion.

Your Affect is chock full of nuance. The repeating patterns are there, laying a solid groundwork. The fractured beats have a way of revolving around a core that’s a loop, but the percussion grows outwardly throughout the runtime, exploring different ideas and themes. The automation on the square synth bass keeps its own momentum running, along with other concurrent momentums; that of the layers of airy synths that fade in and out, grow and dissolve in a surprising, inconsistent way, and that of the actual composition. The chord changes are so severe in how they basically modulate every single running line in a way that feels like twisting the actual body of the music. The effect is neat and intriguing and gives those chord changes a quality that kept me anticipating them once the first one came around.

It’s not often that instrumental techno sounds so exciting and fresh. It’s a kind of music that’s meant to make people move their bodies on the dancefloor, not their heads as they wonder where those sounds came from. But with the ever-shifting atmospheres, the surprising twists, and the oblique chord changes, Reue has successfully managed to make something unique, entertaining, and quite musical.

EP: Down For The Under (Nickelson Remixes) by Nickelson

0

It’s only fitting that a Kentucky native would be responsible for this meticulously crafted and hearty remix. Nickelson is a Louisville native musician and producer, and this is his remix for ‘Down for The Under’. A Kentucky Blues stomper that treads and rocks like a mammoth.

Down for The Under is by JK Mabry and The Maybes. A relatively short Blues Rocker, with a slow tempo and a sizzling attitude. The points that are highlighted by the remixes are massive riffs and the tasteful incorporation of brass into them. The guitars are gigantic, and what the voice lacks in technical proficiency is more than made up for by the musical charisma of the behemoth riffs.

Nickelson’s remixes, one with singing and another that’s an instrumental take, are vastly different from the original. The bountiful guitars that formed the harmonic base in the original have been replaced by deep, throbbing synth basses, and an expansive, airy pad. The sound is metallic and fragmented, but the vibes are chilling, mysterious, and consistently rhythmic, further augmented by the clacky percussion that ramps up in intensity at sections, before fizzling back down to an attention-demanding sparsity. The brass lines have been lovingly kept almost intact in the remixes. Shedding light, perhaps, on what Nickelson thought truly makes the identity of the song.

A chill remix that stands at a widely different vantage point. And while the two views are, essentially, the same thing, they could not be further apart given their surroundings. Masterfully made and a deeply compelling listen.

Superstardom by Dronningen

0

Electro-rock Duo Dronningen based in London, UK, has released another pop rock banger of a song called ‘’Superstardom’’ on the 8th of October. Raucous and electric, this song is yet another powerful drop from the Italian band formed in 2014 in southeast London by Beatrice Bonnano who is the vocalist and guitarist, and Vito Cerasia, the lead guitarist. The band has 3 EPs released and has played in many festivals in countries including Sweden, France, and India. Dronningen has mentioned that some of its inspirational bands are  Royal Blood and Primal Scream.

As always, the song is dark and high in energy, casting shadows of irony and power in the lyrics and music. Superstardom is basically about self-sabotage, overcoming being your own enemy, and reaching a flourishing state without inhibitions. With every guitar, string struck, and drum beat, you feel like you’re growing so much mightiness from the vibe of the song. It is so gratifyingly headbanging with really cool and artistically played electric guitars and high-energy drums creating a jumpy melody and harmony. The song starts with an almost digital, spooky tune. There is a powerful guitar solo and the vocals are playful and harsh in a manner like she’s making fun of the situation she is talking about. This way of singing kicks up the track with a much more fun feeling. Notable sounds would be some dissonant humming of a tune in the background, and lyrics sung in the sound effect of listening to someone over the phone.

Well-written, and full of energy, this song is something you’d want to go crazy over in a moshpit.

Songstress/A Song and Dance Man by Charlie Steady

0

Artist Charlie Steady based in Fresno, US just released two songs ‘Songstress’ and ‘A song and dance man’’ on the 14th of October falling under f the R&B genre, and part of his second full-length album ‘Magpie’ debuting in 2023. The album follows the adventures of a character called Magpie who seeks fame and hopes to become a mega musical star in a big city full of dreams and opportunities. Charlie is a solo artist who first started as a bassist and backing vocals in many bands in his hometown before pursuing his own musical career. Some inspirations for these two songs and albums in full came from the art rock records of the 60s and created indie/art music.

Starting with the R&B/Indie song  ‘Songstress’’, the track follows the story of a  girl who sings, describing what she’s like and how uneasy she feels around other creatives. The overall sound of the song is so groovy and cool, with guitar riffs that remind you of the vintage music of the 70s that makes you want to dance. The rhythm is a medium pace with a cool and funky guitar riff moving the harmony and beat. The chorus is so vocally and musically catchy, painting the intense and high pitch tones in the song and at the end, there is a notable intensity rising in the drums. A notable sound is an instrument that sounds like an electronic sort of trumpet or brass instrument that gives the song a fun feeling. The vocals are a combination of high and low pitches as the story flows. This song just screams nostalgic dance music.

The second song is ‘A song and dance man, which I feel gives a mix of country and rock genres blended together giving us an intense and high-energy song. It talks about how the character magpie has always wanted to be a music and dance man, even though these dreams are dead. The rhythm is a fast one, with a chorus that has a distinct way of vocals that stop at every word as the lyrics are sung, with the drums hitting hard with each stop and syllable. An electric guitar solo full of gloom is the star of this track, followed by low-pitch vocals and soft acoustic guitar.

This album is going to be one hell of a ride, so stay tuned until Magpie is fully out there full of us to enjoy.

Don’t Speak by Reue

0

American artist Reue dropped a bomb EDM/ deep house track called ‘Don’t Speak’, on the 15th of September, from Austin, Texas. The artist considers this track a ‘rain forest style’ psychedelic techno exploration into the 27th song release project this year. Reue is one of the most progressive electronic artists in the scene of his hometown and started reaching that by headlining shows in Boston, Seattle, and all over Central Texas.

Don’t speak is literally a trip into an evergreen jungle with abundant waterfalls. It’s dark, lush, and intense from beginning to end. When listening to the song you feel like you’re floating and at the same time being shaken up inside a big whirlwind.  The overall sound of the track is mysterious and daunting, with a gradual buildup, almost medium making the musical arrangement really exciting, raising exceptions for more incorporation of different sounds. The highs and drops of the song as a techno track aren’t that frequent, maybe even at all. There is a subtle melodic vibe, with the harmony on loop. Notable sounds would be a sound effect of a keyboard creating playful sounds and moving the fast rhythm onto a more suspenseful yet soft element in the track. Another sound effect that’s really special is the sound of something shaking which is present in almost the whole song. Reue mentioned that he created the sounds using all analog synths and drum machines for a rich tone. Listen to this track for a feeling of mystery and excitement.
