Soulful artist Jorge based in Lisbon, Portugal has enchanted us with a shiny new album ‘’Entre Células’’, released earlier this summer with dream pop and ambient music that literally reaches for your hand and transcends you away into galaxies.
Imagine a world where there is nothing but peace. An endless, lush meadow with green fields, white clouds ahead, maybe some sunflowers, water trickling down a sparkling lake, and some birds playing in the sky or maybe even you, flying. At least that’s what it feels like from the moment you click on the first track from the 8 songs in this misty and magical album experience. Jorge mentioned how the workings of the album were inspired by this, saying: “in a world where everything seems to be out of control, it’s best to reconnect to the simple things in life. The sky, the water, the flowers, little unseen things that make the world go round.’’ This album cannot be missed and it is on all digital platforms, yet I believe it deserves to be accessed through more platforms.
It’s clear that Jorge is inspired by artists such as Jullianna Barwick; they are both artists that work with electronic music influenced by alternative and ambient tunes. Jorge took these inspirations and created an electronic audio space in which he seems to have experimented with feelings of peace, co-existence, and free falling into the reassuring nothingness. His catchphrase is, therefore “a vast universe lies between 2 cells.’’ This leads to how this album encompasses tracks that are so diverse in sound, yet they all gather up in a beautiful way to show the ‘infinity’ and ‘simplicity’ of the spaces between each track.
The overall sound of the album is very calming, almost like an easy breath with each song playing. Most of the rhythms are very slow and the music sets you into a reflective mood. It’s perfect for meditation since the musical arrangements almost imitate the dreamy synth waves tones but with a much more sophisticated and universal outtake.
Many songs are created in such a way that the harmonies are repetitive yet serene in how they play out. The harmonies are quite atmospheric and floaty, like candlelight shadows flickering in a temple. The song would start slowly and build up its way into intense melodies in a way that makes you feel like you were thrown into space amongst the stars, just floating. The drum kit and cymbals are used softly in most tracks, with the simple piano made up of very few notes to set the tone for some of the tracks.
The names of the songs really give away what you’re about to listen to. All in Portuguese of course; the theme is a day in life and how it looks like from a peaceful, meditative perspective, which usually advocates for full acceptance of one’s existence as they are on earth. The album starts with slow, pleasant tunes with the song called ‘ Pela Menha’, meaning ‘’by the morning’’, followed by telluric dreams, then ‘Respira’ which means breath. This song in particular has a surprising oriental beat that reminds you of Spanish Andalusian music, with the fastest rhythm on the album. The last two songs are called “When night falls’’ and the last ‘’Sequential looks’, which bring us to the end of the day’s journey, introducing some soothing vocals echoing alongside some ‘’outer spacey’’ tunes, indicating the day successfully falling in peace and it’s time to rest deeper.
This album really lifts you and takes you to a different land from the ones we are used to being in, away from chaos and distress and into peace, acceptance, and serenity. I recommend this album to anyone who wants to become free of anxiety, focus on breathwork, or simply appreciate the simplicity of it all.
With 4 albums, 3 EPs, a live record, and 10 years of gigging and recording music under their belt, Liverpool-based folk ensemble Only Child released their 1st vinyl LP “Looking Forward To Looking Back – A Decade Of Only Child” via Crosstown Records and with songs remastered by Pete Maher (U2).
so let me tell you how it goes,
The record kicks off with the mellow, prayer-like “Only Child”, its mellow flow and emotional melodies put me in an instant chilling mood and sets the tone for what to expect. “Lookin’ for a Song” has a more open sound, beautiful vocal harmonies, and lovely arpeggios and guitar melodies that whispered life into the lyrics. Taking us into a more groovy area comes “Everybody Comes From Something”, it has some bittersweet hopeful melodies with colorful sounds and playful dynamics. With a heart-hitting emotional melody, “Scouse” starts. It has time-traveling folky melodies with perfect instrumentation harmonies and layering in a beautifully arranged fluid dynamic structure. “Bruce” cement’s Only Child’s americana roots with a classic groove and sound before getting into the rocking “William Ralph Dean”. “William Ralph Dean” has loads of influences perfectly mashed together, it has pounding drums and rocking riffs alongside folky melodies in yet another dynamic entertaining structure with a super catchy flow. “North John Street” steers the album into a slower area with some psychedelic mood and a poetic vocal delivery, it sheds more light on Only Child’s unique songwriting, definitely one of my favorites. “…And The Band Played On” is a beautiful rock n roll appreciation ballad with awesome vibes and an easy-going floating flow. “Accidental Englishman” is one of Only Child’s well-written classic folky tunes mixed with some country vibes with yet another chilling mellow mood. Only Child ends the record on a high note with the festive western swaying tune “Straight Lines”. It has beautiful vibes with a big sound fitting for a movie soundtrack or something, loved its flow and layering and how it came to end the record in a way that made me play it all over again.
“Looking Forward To Looking Back – A Decade Of Only Child” is a solid entertaining record with diverse influences and skilled music writing. I liked the dynamics of the whole record and how the tracks were arranged in a way that keeps you focused with smooth twists and turns here and there. Looking forward to more from Only Child, cheers!
We are here with Maddisun, a singer/songwriter from British Columbia. She released her new album “Home Is Where The Music Is”, which is just a concoction of genres to match Maddisun’s fluid range. Let’s dive right into the interview.
I love how you spell your name “Maddison”, what made you opt for “Maddisun” instead of the traditional spelling of the name?
I was asked this question at a show recently! I remember I chose this when I was living in Ireland, it kinda just came to me. It’s evolved into more of a theme now though, I’m a really “sunny” and happy/positive person, so it fits with my personality and music too 🙂
Who mixed and mastered your album?
Nick Noto of PSY Sound. The production company I worked with out in Los Angeles!
Who are your musical influences? Do you think they played a part in your new album?
Some of my musical influences are Maggie Rogers, Sheryl Crow, Joni Mitchell, The Band, Elvis, Shania Twain, Amy Winehouse, and Heart…. to name a few! Lots of classics, so it definitely comes out in my music. The country also comes out a little with Sheryl/Shania/Dolly too! The soul comes out on this new album as well, that’s Elvis and Amy in there.
I know that COVID really affected everyone but especially musicians. How has COVID affected your music and your touring?
It definitely affected my ability to even book shows, when everything was completely shut down.
Since then, things have just been less consistent, and the pay structure has changed it seems. Gigs are still getting canceled, especially if I or anyone is sick – it seems to be taken more seriously now (I think that could in fact be a good thing). I’ve definitely tried to power through a gig even when I was sick in the past!
Tell us more about your new album, what was the inspiration behind the name?
“Home Is Where The Music Is” is a very special album and concept for me. I used to live abroad in Ireland, and I went back there to do some songwriting for this album. Then I recorded the album in L.A, and have since been touring all over Canada and the USA.
Sometimes the concept of home gets a bit fuzzy, and I feel a disconnect, but when I can play music, write, or just listen, I feel at home again. This album is really a lot about “coming home to myself”
Will there be a tour for your album release?
I’m on tour right now! All over Canada and then into the United States. Follow here!
There’s also a video release! My new video for “Running” – one of the songs on the album – was just released.
Watch it here:
Where was your album recorded?
In Los Angeles, California! It was incredible to be out there in such a heavy musical/artistic city while recorded. It kept me really inspired. Every day there was dialed up to like 10, just non-stop. The album was recorded in only 12 days!
How do you feel your life changed after the success of your debut album “Self Reflections” which garnered you over 200,000 streams on Spotify alone?
That was back in 2020, and things were slow due to COVID, so honestly it was a really hard time to release an album. Things really started to change when I toured “Self Reflections”, and started playing with a band, booking festivals, and travelling again. So I feel my first album gave me a really good foundation to build on, and I still love it so much.
The Coaticook-based singer/songwriter and producer, Marcus Quirion, is giving us a glimpse of his next album with the fresh-sounding and spirit-lifting single, “Filet désert.”
I have a thing for French songs, although I don’t speak French. So, I don’t know if I can be mutual here because I instantly loved Marcus Quirion’s “Filet désert” once I heard it. However, I don’t think the reason is being in French; it’s because of how atmospheric and a complete mood booster it is. It would be a good start to your day!
“Filet désert” is a Pop/Soft Rock hybrid song that sounds as joyful and liberating as the giggles coming while swaying carelessly on a swing, leaving all troubles behind, and seeming small from a higher view. It opens with a mellow synth tune and raw, delightful vocals that, as it develops, sound like sarcastic rap-ish delivery. It’s surely one of the key elements that gives that feel-good energy. Also, grooving with the rhythms is obligatory, as what choice do you have with these elated hooks and kicky percussions?
Obviously, I didn’t understand the lyrics, but I could notice how they were neatly written, and I didn’t have to learn them to feel the good vibe. But as I’m an enthusiast for languages, I looked up the lyrics for full enjoyment, and I found out that it’s a sincere, realistic storytelling, which might be Marcus Quirion’s personal experience, but it’s highly relatable.
The single is arranged in the most light-hearted manner, leaving you with a smile on your face, anticipating the rest of the album.
Delicate music is such a delicate formula to execute. It’s hard to make music that’s soft and personal and still make it stand out, have power and stance, and show discernable character. Milo venus tries out her own twist on this formula with her latest EP release, No Consequences.
The 19-year-old Seattle native is a sensual musician. Soft and delicate soundscapes are all over this release, along with sweet, personal lyrics. Even the moments that display more power than others still carry a distinct softness that pads the hit.
SunnyDbobaT starts a trend of the minimal musical landscape, characterized by tickling synths and gentle guitar. It’s a sunny song with synth hits that sound like bird chirps, together with Milo’s soft words and delivery, and sparse guitar notes. The note starts with a dense, gritty, strummed electric guitar that’s a little bit on the hotter side, but is then directly neutralized by a pillowy layer of pads that softens the impact of the overdriven electric, and helps solidify a musical context to the personal story milo sings of. Crazy Boys, while not a departure from the already established style, is the first conventional, textbook, singer-songwriter tune. With a warm, strummed acoustic guitar, melancholic progressions, and brooding dark organs. IDKHTT continues along the melancholic path, with more introspective words and with the addition of thick sub-bass that adds a new layer of excitement and personality. Bridge The Gap is a beautifully written, minimal stunner. Dominated by silky, deep synth pads, soft singing, and beautiful, rich composition, it’s my personal favorite. Milo wraps things up with Little Nice. A sad and personal cut with throbbing bass and a flowing feel that makes the song a very easy one to love.
No Consequences is a simple, humble album. While not overflowing with novel experiments, it certainly has more than enough character and intent to stand up for itself and make a statement. It was pleasant, short listen that whetted our appetites for what this young artist will make next. She’s currently working on some singles, and we can’t wait to have them on our table.
The idea of charm in music is a difficult one to understand or define. A song can be good or bad, that’s subjective, and I can always give reasons as to why a certain song rocks my boat, while another one doesn’t… but I always found it hard to say why any song is “charming”. It’s an elusive quality, you might not even think of it. Meet divine&acajou. She’s on a quest to make infinitely charming songs.
This is the Parisian’s second release, after an acclaimed single a couple of months back. You Got Me Here is an eclectic mix of several styles, that feel warm and pleasant, and easy on the senses. One can spot traces of Jazz, Latin, and World music, all wrapped up in an ever-so-familiar sheen of singer-songwriter accessibility.
The delicate rhythmic percussion, exotic and mild, drives the song, along with a jumpy and melodic bass line. The composition is major, cheerful, and optimistic. The singing is a highlight of this release and this artist’s entire arsenal. totally in control, yet unbound and free, divine&acajou wails and howls, dips, and soars, with endless confidence. Moderate, spaced-out phrases give the composition massive room to breathe and make the whole experience a sensory exciting one.
Divine&acajou is so refreshingly free, yet full of graceful, natural restraint. You Got Me Here is a seriously sweet release full of distilled charms and musical nuance. I Love It.
There’s a lot going on in this minute-and-a-half piece of dark, wordless electronica. CRUCIAL is Penny’s debut single. Penny is Penny Loftéen, a producer from Stockholm, Sweden. He is injecting a lot of meaning into this tiny piece of sonic architecture.
CRUCIAL is about being transported from a state of panic and anxiety back to life, through the words of a special someone. Instead of capturing the sound from the perspective of the positive mind, the doer, Penny opted to capture it from the dark side, that of the anxious mind. A very original take on an otherwise overused trope. The result is dark, foreboding throbbing bass on top of a haunting minimal composition, delivered via eerie effects and mysterious clicks. The beat is industrial and dominated by clacky, sparse percussion. The comforting words are perhaps delivered through the hauntingly melodic, chopped-up voice. A processed spectral lull that sticks to the mind.
CRUCIAL is one and a half minutes long, and it’s a debut single, and it’s somehow spectacular. I’m more than happy to say that Penny Loftéen has far exceeded our expectations, and we’re now waiting for what more he has to offer.
There’s always something special about good eastern European dance and electropop songs. They are just a little better than the competition. Just so ready to be blasted, remixed, sampled, and danced to.
12 Limbs are an indie pop band from the Serbian capital, Belgrade. Fusing indie guitar charm with just a touch of moderate electronica, they certainly managed to create a sound that’s theirs, but also familiar and easily accessible. Their latest single, Escort, leans heavily on the electronic side of the recipe. Promising to be a massive summer hit and a staple across the global dance scene.
Listening in, it’s easy to spot just where this confidence sprang from. A driving, mild-tempo electronic beat leads the arrangement onward with sure feet. The composition is perfectly balanced yet playful. The choruses and the verses blend seamlessly with a few borrowed chords that provide the meal with just enough spice, and a number of very attractive sonic effects and manipulations fizzle in and out of view. A masterful arrangement that gives up just enough, not too little, and definitely not too much. The words are a little brash. The message is very resonant, and the singing is cheeky and colorful, but the choice of words may have faltered just a little here and there.
An overall exciting electropop, a danceable banger, with a ton of merit and potential. 12 Limbs have secured a place for themselves on our radar, and we’ll be impatiently waiting for more.
