Shores of Mercy by Michael Kiel Cash

0

“Shores of Mercy” is the latest album from NYC-based singer-songwriter Michael Kiel Cash, and it’s honestly one of the most joyful and well-rounded records I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.

Being in the business for two decades now, Mr. Cash starts off his album with the track “Flood of Springtime Dreams,” a very calm track that feels like a bard performing his poetry in a medieval-age bar. If there was such a thing as a collaboration between Johnny Cash and Elvis, this is what it would probably sound like.

After that, we are presented with “Lying With My Baby,” which was released as a single and is a very upbeat and romantic tune that will probably score big numbers in terms of record sales and radio play. There is a second (backing) female vocalist with Mr. Cash, and she adds a nice flavor with her harmonious approach. This song strikes every variable of the hard equation of being an easy-listening pop hit while also being a magnum opus in terms of musical ability and good songwriting. A true masterpiece and my favorite.

The third track, “Love’s Arroyo,” has a super catchy harmonica that will make you feel like you’re at a royal palace gala or a traditional revivalist party, doing some traditional dances and maybe throwing coins in the musicians’ flipped hats to show appreciation for their entertaining tunes. Up to this point in the album, there is an awesome balance between all the string instruments, which I believe are a semi-hollow guitar and a mandolin, giving country, blues-rock, and folk elements in a pleasant mix.

The fourth track, “Hoophead’s Country Blues,” has a lovely accordion and feels like a traveler or an outlaw just began a poetry recital in the bar of a small countryside town. Thanks to the spoken word vocals and the accordion-harmonica battle going on. Mr. Cash begins showcasing his head voice more in this track, and it’s so impressive and likable.

Although the fifth track, “Rattlebox,” doesn’t have the word “blues” in its name (like some other tracks here), it’s the most blues-sounding of the bunch so far. It makes more use of the male-female dynamic in a duet arrangement this time, not just as a backup. The track makes use of brass instruments and a beautiful fiddle that delivers the sadness along with the vocals to create a very immersive experience. I truly loved it.

The sixth track, “Heart of The Mountain,” begins with a nice keyboard line and a soft drumbeat that makes use of perfectly timed rim shots, alternating with soulful snare hits in the chorus and heavenly backing vocals. Mr. Cash belts high notes and uses more the voice cracks and soft head voice. And this is, so far, the most vocally challenging song on the record. The female vocals chant along with the last chorus till the soft outro that Mr. Cash softly sings and I am truly impressed.

The seventh track, “Pinhole Pass,” is a stripped-down and simplistic song with only guitars, vocals, and some lo-fi keyboard/synth lines, which makes it all more impactful.

The eighth and title track, “Shores Of Mercy,” is also simplistic and easy to listen to. It utilizes beautiful accordion melodies with vocals that feel like they are telling you a story.

The ninth track, “Winged Kiss,” sounds like a bunch of old proverbs and wisdom being given to a child, and I love its vocal delivery so much. At this point, though, we know the formula: the fiddle and strings are for upbeat songs, and the harmonica, accordion, and strings are for sad tunes. I thought I could predict what’s coming in the next tracks if I considered this as a rule.

To my surprise, “Muscadine Wine”-the tenth track-breaks those predictions and has spoken/storytelling vocals like the first half of the album, with a very pleasant timbre and tone. The fiddle harmonizes and sways with the accordion, bringing you a sense of peace and joyfulness as you listen to it. This album is the gift that keeps on giving.

The eleventh track, “Hymn of The Harvest,” had one more surprise for me: a full-blown choir, and as if a country, folk, and blues rock weren’t enough, we now have classical music elements. If you visualized, like me, that you were in a small town in the countryside, living with this music at traditional parties and local musicians, this is probably what the local church choir would sound like.

I’m starting to grow more and more fond of Mr. Cash’s compositional mindset and the belief that he can make music in any style he imagines.

The twelfth and final track of this awesome joyride, “D&RGW Chili Line Blues,” is a fest of all the instruments we heard before, and Mr. Cash sings alone and with much grit here. What a way to end a huge yet comprehensible record with tons of influence and a myriad of instruments mixed up. I’m keeping this album.

II by Seafarers

Have you ever looked back at your teenage years and thought, what the hell was I thinking? I’m sure we’ve all asked ourselves this question at some point in our adult life. Don’t you wish you had a guide or a manual to move by because of how lost you felt and just had so many unanswered questions? Seafarers’ new album “II” is that manual we’ve all hoped for during our teenage years. The band is back with a 2nd album after the huge success of their debut album “Orlando” released back in 2020, the album was such a hit and received amazing feedback from different renowned platforms and high streaming numbers like “And Maybe I’m Scared” the 7th track in the album that reached over 112K streams on Spotify only.

The seafarers are a group of five remarkable musicians with different backgrounds and diverse interests, the London-based group united their interests and extensive background resulting in clashing genres between contemporary folk, jazz, indie folk, improv, and chamber pop to create a unique and aesthetically pleasing sound. The group was brought together by Matthew Herd the saxophone player and songwriter in 2018 to record their debut album, joined by Lauren Kinsella who is a vocalist, composer, and improviser. The third member of the band is the guitarist and vocalist Arun Thavasothy who has a remarkably distinctive voice with a unique character. Tom McCredie is a bassist with a reputation as one of the country’s most original instrumentalists and writers and then Dave Hamblett, who is a remarkably talented drummer. Tom Taylor is a long-term musical collaborator and pianist and is well known for his improvised music talent. Together this strong, skilled, and experienced group of musicians were able to create something much more than a sound to entertain, it’s a story, a manual, and a guide for all the lost teenagers out there.

“II” is a 10-song album with a well-curated storyline and order of events, the first half of the album is about the wild feelings we experience in high school and how we try so hard to fit in and impress everyone around us, that we become desperate to grab attention and join the “Cool, popular crowd”. It’s the wild ride of an emotional rollercoaster where you question everything about yourself, your sexuality, your feelings, and your identity. It is reflected in songs like “Newlyweds” and “A disappearing Act”, which both combined have over 170K streams on Spotify only. The second half of the album is about what’s going on behind closed doors and starts to dig deeper into the inner struggles that not everyone sees or understands which shows in “The Curators” which Matthew Herd says was probably the most personal song he has ever written. A beautifully organized series of events that covers it all. The album was produced by Euan Burton, with the help of sound engineers Katie May, Patrick Phillips, and assistant engineer Loan Hazell. The mixing was done by Patrick Phillips as well at Real World Studios and mastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering. This album is not just about music or entertainment, it’s about so much more!!

Show Me What You Live For by Nicholas Langdon

0

Sometimes we can go to great lengths to make something work. We think, then plan, then toil, then think some more to achieve something spectacular and memorable, that’ll never be as good as when the stars simply align, and everything magically falls into place…

The Preston native Brit, Nicholas Langdon, is here with his debut double-sided single. Side A is ‘Show Me What You Live For’. A starry-eyed crossover between Oasis, Coldplay & The National. Despite what I said, Nick thought, planned, and toiled then thought some more to create this little gem. But it’s a certain mystical element that makes this song work that well (at least to my ears). Maybe because I happen to be a fan of every single artist that this song reminds me of.

A percussive synth plays a minimalistic Coldplay-tinged melody that persists and hangs quite well in the ears. Massive drums with well-calculated reverb add a beautiful depth with powerful rock beats full of attitude. And then comes Langdon’s commanding baritone singing a very simple melody that astonishingly complements the synth melody, achieving together a quality that’s as eventless as the humdrum nature of the everyday life events Nick sings of, and also as sweet and as reassuring as these can be.

A lesson in restraint, and awareness of coloration. How not to create a jumble of images and colors and moods, but instead to paint with a steady hand and a complementing palette. A very beautiful and passionate listen that’s also smart and catchy and musically intricate and complete.

Restart by Xavier Bernazard

0

The latest song from Dallas-based singer Xavier Bernazard, Restart, is quite an exceptional song. The track opens with a bright keyboard line highly reminiscent of 80s pop-rock. The heavenly vocals begin shortly after, and while they sound grounded and strong, they are highly passionate too. I found the delivery to be very broadway-ish…it’s as if Mr.Xavier is in a scene from a musical…resenting the toll of time and missing his days of youth. For the most part, the singing is in the tenor range, and the high notes felt like they come with so much ease and control. Not many singers can vocalize over a guitar solo and make it sound this good.

The tone and settings of the guitar itself remind me of Evanescence on their 2000 Origin Demo…As oddly specific as this sounds, I remembered the guitar solo of the song Anywhere from said album. I’m guessing this guitar sound was tweaked around via a multi-effect or a pedal. Getting to sound exactly like your influences without copying them or being distasteful is not an easy thing to achieve. Kudos to Mr.Fox DeVaughn for making me feel that pleasant nostalgia.

The way the guitar line sounds easy on the ears while present throughout the song is achieved by the stellar production of Nathan McCord, who also provides solid drumming for this track. Mr.Alex Hodge seamlessly plays his lines on the bass guitar, supporting the song’s guitar and vocals with tremendous skill. Mr.Xavier Bernazard is, in my biased opinion, the male equivalent of singers like Amy Lee and Florence Welsh, who both have a powerful technique rooted in conveying their feelings through their vocal lines. He made it feel like an effortless task to paint a mental image you can relate to and resonate with.

RCV by Jacobi.e

Have you ever been tortured because you despaired love? You should be, because the Jamaican-American artist and producer Jacobi.e has dropped his first song “RCV” to come out of this world, and he has a lot of great music that will soon drown you out.

Since its inception in 2020, Jacobi.e Bedroom has been the laboratory of experiments with his voice on pop music. He even brought us appropriately into this world with his dark and turbulent debut single, Rcv, fusing a rocky background with contemporary flavors from Dominic Fike and Kanye.

Jacobi.e on RCV asserts that his singing is a sweet sonic point that ripples and shapes with the track. The track moves in unconventional and often sinister ways because of its lyrics, but never loses its sense of accessibility and the charm of pop music.

In RCV the themes of love and despair are explored throughout the track, with the torture the artist faces due to it and seen in the video that exemplifies this obsessive search for mutual love. This track is diverse, interesting, new, and unlike anything you’ve seen before.

This edition proves Jacobi.e’s flair as a producer on the one hand, and as a singer on the other, bringing together both dark edges and captivating and melodic sensualities that continue to highlight his endless creativity and his potential as a true artist. He succeeded in making me eager for his next release.

Marathon by Alex Slay & Clover Jamez

When you blend the sense of innovation into a smooth R&B song, with an honest, straightforward songwriting style, you hear Alex Slay and Clover Jamez’s new track “Marathon.”

Alex Slay is a master of his songwriting and this track is filled with examples that confirm my point, he has a free spirit and a summery feel and retains an amazing ability to dance to his music. Slay takes us through this on a journey into the concept of life that does not stop and time flies by, we live in an endless marathon, the nature of which is governed by our daily choices. Many of us go through these stages and suddenly we find ourselves wanting to give up, but we have to keep going.

The entire track is flanked by innovative R&B beats and a cool LOFI background that feels fresh and free-spirited, tightly held together amid vocal harmonies, here Slay manages to combine his various elements with a sense of ease and effort that few can do.

“Marathon” is so full of so much that I can’t stop playing it, the vocal overlap between Slay and Jamez creates something new in this track that takes us with it constantly.

Slay’s music career took off after touring the world and performing on cruise ships until he eventually settled in Nashville and started releasing his music. Clover Jamez grew up in Pennsylvania listening to everything from Motown to Blink 182 and Biggie Smalls. His music has appeared on hit shows such as Fox’s Empire, Hawaii Five-0, CBS’ The Equalizer, and Hulu’s Dave. Therefore, the duet that arose between them was not in vain, but he enjoyed me, and I hope he will also entertain you.

Is It Really so Hard? by Velar Prana

0

Velar Prana just dropped his latest single “Is It Really So Hard?” featuring Modest Oda, an Instagram friendship that evolved into something fruitful. Both artists came up with the idea of the song together then Modest Oda came up with the first lyrics which Velar Prana transferred into an upbeat and fun indie-pop song. Velar Prana is the stage name for the Viennese, Austrian artist Clemens Gumpoldsberger who writes, records and produces his music.

He started by spending his school nights at the turntables in clubs till he became the renowned artist he currently is. He is distinguished by his previous single “Turn the Lights Down” which went viral and has over 1.2M streams on Spotify only. The artist depends heavily on electronic sound effects and electronic instrumentation yet he’s keen on keeping a human touch and raw instruments since he has extensive experience in playing the viola and drums which distinguishes him from other artists who completely rely on electronic-based sounds. Modest Oda on the other hand “it is the cutting off of one’s own roots. Blurring of self-imposed boundaries”. The artist is based in Graz, Austria with an alternative rock start and is now shifting his sound by replacing the guitar and bass with 2 synthesizers while the drum is being exchanged with a drum machine, while the vocals are redesigned using digital harmonies and sound effects. The song has fresh energy and a chill vibe; it is about letting opportunities pass and feeling stuck only to realize that you are standing in your way. It just tells you that sometimes you need to pause, take a step back and reflect, to give yourself a chance to free yourself from your own boundaries.

IDK by Proklaim

An artist “Alexander Kiremire” based in Namibia, who goes by the name “Proklaim,” always had been into hip hop and rap at an early age and was influenced by great artists like Jay Z, Eminem, Tupac, The Wutang  Clam… etc., “Proklaim” is sending out truthful messages through his new single release called “IDK” that was on the 28th of July, 2022.

He raps with total confidence and his lyrics flow through your ears with immense power that cultivates deep meanings that Alexander wishes to connect to his listeners through it. The track starts with a catchy melody and then comes to a rhythmic beat that is synchronized with the melodies that carry the lyrical vibes of what he raps.

It seems that he got all the words in one breath, “Proklaim” has a great and powerful meaning that he has written in his words that makes sense to what we’re going through at the moment and our everyday life experiences we face.

This piece gives you awesome strength to your day and motivates you to get through any hardships that get you thinking and predict the next move, the hip hop beats to it are so mesmerizing and moving that is perfect for your workout and the words that come out of it will hype you up more.

Fav Flavor by Amanda Holley

0

It can be quite difficult to know what to do with a talent you have. Amanda Holley is a Newark native songstress. And she’s here with her latest single, ‘Fav Flavor’.

Amanda certainly possesses talent. She has a golden larynx that soars all across five octaves of pure rich and controlled vocal goodness. She has also teamed up with the Grammy award-winning vocal producer RichRoyce on… well, vocal production, and with producer OhKayLaws. She also seeked inspiration from her deep-down passion for love and music to come up with the words and the melodies for this single.

I can’t, with certainty, though, put my hand on that melody. The song is full to the brim with vocal lines that seemingly compete to reach the highest note in a race that’s dizzying at points, and the honestly gorgeous vocal production stands helpless in the face of this race to the last breath. The instrumentation, too, is polished and sophisticated but buried far beneath the layers of vocals on what can either be a production blunder, or just a bad choice.

Amanda’s voice is astonishingly powerful and sweet. Her words and her passion flow right out with considerable ease. But with a production that’s simply lost and a melody that fails to stay on any stable grounds, this is a listen that’s unsatisfying. Stay on the lookout for Amanda’s massive talent, hopefully with more harmonious songwriting and with a production that truly allows her to shine and steal the show, as she ought to be doing.
