Mistakes and Heartbreak by N4November

0

Musicians don’t necessarily go through more hardships or turmoil in life than anyone else, but what sets them apart is how they lay their souls bare for us to see – giving us a glimpse of those intricate human emotions we all struggle to understand and explain. In his latest single “Mistakes and Heartbreak”, Alex, the sole member of his one-man band “N4November”, pens a sorrowful open letter to a lover that he lost. Something very unique about this song is the tone and demeanor Alex is using as he directly speaks to his (ex) lover, reciting what went wrong and how crushingly regretful he feels about it.

The song begins with lo-fi synthesizers over layered vocals that make you feel like you’re going through a mid-winter teenage heartbreak sometime in the 2000s. Electronic drums and minimalist clean guitars accompany the chorus and it’s not really until the second verse that we can hear more vibrant guitar passages, which creates a feeling of accumulation. Accumulation of feelings and unsaid words – I can see now why the song was named Mistakes and Heartbreak.

Alex’s lyrics and the way he mournfully chants them hit me hard, like how he starts the second verse by saying:

“It was one more night

I didn’t want to fight with you

For the thousandth time

Ignored the warning signs

Now you’ll never be mine…” which was so honest and heartfelt. By the time we reach the second half of the bridge, Alex sings his highest notes in the passage

“I wish I knew what I know now

I wish I could go back somehow”

and it impressed me because most of the song, except for this part, has lower notes and is sung in a typical baritone range.

I can’t think of the last time I heard someone as sincerely heartbroken as this. Something feels extra honest about such a masculine voice sounding vulnerable and questioning whether or not he was enough, and he ends the last lyric by confirming “I’m not enough”. Alex’s consistent and strong chest voice with its grounded low parts and supported high belts sent shivers down my spine more than once. My only setback with this song will probably be my fear of repeating it too much and feeling that sense of despair it puts me through time and again. Considering this was the first song Alex wrote when he was 16 years old, it made me wish more artists would go back to basics and channel emotions they can describe in detail just like this.

Survival by Havoc Osiris

Havoc Osiris is a dystopian hip-hop producer who recently started making music completely different from the norm which has made him stand out as one of the most talented artists, pushing the boundaries of modern music and making his work unique in today’s scene.

Osiris’ music masterfully combines elements of techno, heavy metal, synthwave, experimental, 8-bit, Cyberpunk, industrial, and other genres to create a chaotic and often dark atmosphere that lifts you away from reality.

On his fourth album, “Survival,” released this year, Osiris masterfully plays your usual instincts and puts you in a survival sandbox, with 12 tracks that focus heavily on the mechanics of wordless survival. The goal of the album.

(Survival – Hunter – Power Hour…) and others tell their own stories, being a unique and brilliant conceptual concept, perfectly crafted from start to finish, Osiris blends an industrial style rooted in dystopian worlds, his music based more on fantasy than reality,

Delivering a perfect taste of somber and contrasting synth with a rhythm that weaves a lively, otherworldly landscape without abrupt twists on a captivating journey through the mind.

Being an artist creating his style is a difficult burden to bear at first, as Osiris wants to break all preconceived notions and put his music in a world where everyone is welcome but only the special stand out.

Havoc Osiris plans to evolve as a producer and leave his listeners with experiences they will never forget, so be among them and have your own experience with him, while we are waiting for more of his creations.

Vol. 0 by Amateur Aztec Hour

What’s more interesting than music? Probably nothing but what is even more interesting is music with context, meaning, and intriguing stories behind it. Amateur Aztec Hour is a solo project by Mexican, American, and Texas-based Daniel Ramirez. He’s a multi-talented artist who is a songwriter, sings, produces, and plays the guitar, bass, keys, synth, MPC, and Sp-404. “Vol. 0” is the project’s debut album that started in Spring 2021 when Daniel’s last living grandparent; Raul Ramirez passed. He looked up to him and he describes him as a “mythical man”; he lived to be 99, fought in World War 2, and was a remarkable Aztec athlete with great health and rare doctors’ visits. Another thing that Daniel found worth mentioning is that his grandfather was born after the Spanish flu that ended in 1920 and died a month before COVID hit San Antonio. This changed the perspective of the artist toward life, existentialism, and revelation; he started asking more important questions like “who are we? who do we think we are? and why are we here?”. Working on this album and experimenting helped the artist find meaning and purpose, he explored different soundscapes and diminishes that reflect different realities.

The album has a total of 13 tracks, each with a different subject deeper than the other, from modernity, substance abuse, and self-deprecation to existentialism and social criticism. “Clandestination” for instance is based on the 80s movie Mannequin, which as the artist explains “is a Carpe Diem fascination with mannequins that questions the perpetual use of these strange shells of humans that are forever upright and frozen in time.” Another song “Remakes” is about how nature always wins and takes over. As for “Home Bodies” it implies that aging is inevitable. Each of these songs has a much deeper story behind it that changes your entire perspective when listening to them. The music is filled with lo-fi elements and a psychedelic aesthetic. The album is very poetic and deep in its context and reflections, it’s very lyrical and leaves you wondering and with more questions to debate. Most of the songs would all fit together as one, the music is thematic with changes in its different elements and components, but the vibe and main musical ideas are the same and fall together. Given the artist’s talents, the songs are heavily loaded with a range of sound effects, synths, electronic beats, strong bass lines, drum pads sound, and 70s-inspired sounds. The vocals are unique, unusual, and very distinguishing; the acoustics and placement sound as if you’re in a tunnel or a deep well. The album is very philosophical so listen with an open mind and I’m sure you’ll leave with more questions.

I Miss the Old You (Instrumental) by Sean David Christensen

Sean David Christensen is a filmmaker and musician living in Los Angeles whose work has been shown at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Pictoplasma Berlin, SXSW, and The Hammer Museum. Christensen is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Center for Visual Anthropology.

“I Miss the Old You”, is a modern track that feels like a nostalgic classic. It combines elements of folk and jazz in its composition creating a finger-snapping timeless tune reminiscent of Mark Ronson’s re-recording of Valerie featuring Amy Winehouse. It will take you on a journey filled with sorrow and remembrance with an uplifting melody, a tiny amount of guitar, and a smooth trumpet quartet.

The song is an energizing throwback jazz/funk remix. The trumpets may be the greatest element of the song, as they provide depth and passion to an energetic combination of slide guitar and mellotron, bringing the song to life. As the tune proceeds and the Trumpets intensify, you are rapidly swept up in a maelstrom of emotion, only to be returned to the upbeat, playful tone established at the beginning.

A stunning tribute to a great genre, this tune earns an 8/10. Honestly, a song like this would be a great addition to a film’s soundtrack.

Certified lover boy by BoyBoy

Fresh outta Perth, Australia a hip-hop artist goes with the name Boyboy, his music is categorized in the feel-good music that beams out of his songs with his soulful vocals. He is releasing a new single of the year 2022 on the 17th of May called “Certified lover boy” which has a really cool and breezy vibe that can wave your body to it.

He delivers a feeling that is similar to lofi music that stimulates dopamine in your brain, his vocals, and the rhythmic beats are the main characters that play in producing his music and that is what made “Certified lover boy” talks about love and emotions that we all are so common in those feelings that he can connect through the music. Having to chill while listening to this song is what makes it special and has a unique vibe to it that gets you going with the flow of the beats.

Listening to some other of the songs he produced, it all has the same vibe to them like “Old School,” “LTPF,” “RIP,” and “INTERFERE: Two-Part Series” collaborating with Stan Cavier and Sowdy accomplishing the same mix of vibes, he also, did a similar vibe to the song “Simmerdown” which has a mix of different songs adding his own soulful touch to it and making it slow and cool to the listeners.

Hopefully, I’ll be keeping an eye for every and each release this guy produces, the vibes never miss hitting my brain with that dope music he makes. Give his music some space in your daily mornings or evenings with a cup of tea.

Champion by David Baron and Fiona Glenn

0

“Champion” is the latest offering from composer David Baron in collaboration with the sweet vocalist Fiona Glenn, and it’s a pretty motivational and anthemic single.

When writing this song, songwriter Donna Lewis was inspired by the world-renowned Olympian gymnast Simone Biles after being put down by critics multiple times for withdrawing from an Olympic event, but she was still standing tall. The way the string section begins this song puts you in the state of mind of being an Olympian, superhero, or even a movie protagonist reaching their goals and desires after a hectic journey.

We are then hit by the passionate vocals of 17-year-old Fiona Glenn who sings like she has a decade-long career behind her, and blows my mind with how catchy she sounds. I could sense some similarities (in the color of her voice) to Lorde and Ellie Goulding, but you most definitely won’t mix them up due to the unique and airy way Fiona delivers her lines.

Real drums and brief electric guitars accompany the synthesizers and orchestrations throughout this uplifting track, and in the second half, a brass section can be heard too- because how can you have a champion-celebrating song without charming trumpets to go with the it-The track is filled with short yet impactful statements such as:

“Mighty fighter

Such a sight ya

The champion

Cause’ nobody can keep you down…”

And the bridge that repeats:

“No one can keep me down

No one can keep me down…”

By the end of the song I was longing for more and couldn’t keep myself from repeating it to keep getting that sweet sense of stardom and strength that it gives. Fiona Glenn caught Mr Baron’s attention at one point and he decided to collaborate with her, and the result was this flamboyant anthem that will be stuck in people’s heads for months.

CHASIN (Ft. TX Tooley) by Comics Kade

0

Music can be quite serious… but sometimes it can be the opposite of that, and then it becomes real fun!

‘CHASIN’ is the latest offering from the Midland, TX-based songwriter and self-proclaimed one-man-boyband Comics Kade. In his own words, a song to remind you of Y2K radio pop hits, think Ice Cube, Nelly Furtado, or things in that same vein.

What is it? CHASIN is in its essence a very hip little song, sporting a simple beat and a single instrument playing a sampled, watery chord progression. With Comics Kade mumbling on top in a lighthearted way. In its essence, a song not taking itself too seriously.

The words and melodies are simple, repetitive (but not in a bad way), and easy to digest. The production is fresh and functional. Featuring TX Tooley on the hottest Atlanta Rap break, with a hefty serving of heavy autotune… Yum!

Judging this song on its artistic merits will be totally missing the point. Without getting too philosophical over creativity and “Art” with the capital A, I can just say that music can be equally worthy of attention and deserving of respect when it’s this light and poppy as it would be if it was high-brow Jazz. This isn’t Jazz. It’s full of attitude… and it’s Hella fun.

The Edge by MJ Duke

Young talent Martin Birrane – MJ Duke has shone like a star in the music sky since his debut in London, specifically in 2020, after he released a series of singles and EPs, the first of which was on his record “On Time”, focused largely on displaying his artistic sensitivity and emphasized Musical review, the last of which is the track “The Edge”.

After a general hiatus, MJ Duke returns to let his music speak for him, providing us with exceptional vocal harmony, making us feel comfortable, belonging, and dealing with ourselves and others because his song “The Edge” carries a lot from this style.

“The Edge”, the new single by MJ Duke, has caught my eye and is sure to attract a lot of fans. Her style is very distinctive and with time since her release at the beginning of this month, the audience is increasing due to Birrane’s presence and attractive vocals.

This song relies on acoustic guitars and tones derived from hip-hop music, to present an optimistic piece of art, and absorbs the meanings of its words from the land of struggle, where confronting negative thinking, self-defense, transforming everything negative into positive, and building a human entity after extracting hope.

The song provides a light flow of good music, when you hit the track for the first time it will catch your eye. Duke’s unique tone, expressive and gritty, paired with quality brass and short vibrato creates a great dynamic.

When Duke released his song “The Edge”, Duke reminds us that his style is appreciable, and he assures us that he is lyrically expressive, so we can’t wait to release his album next July to our enjoyment of his artistic prowess.
