Thank U by Greg Bounce

0

Artist Greg Bounce based in Lisbon, Portugal found it so easy to get inspired to write songs again by the creative nature of the city since moving in 2020 and decided to bless us with new music releases, with the most recent, ‘ Thank u’, a rhapsodic composition of dream pop on 22 November.

This acclaimed single will transport you to a place of open skies and endless gratefulness. The whole creation makes you get in touch with the purity of the heart and soul of Greg. The overall sound of the song is uplifting and spiritual in a modern way. Its the vocal texture and choice of instruments and sound that makes this song distinct from any other kind of soul-speaking music. It’s like somebody is telling you everything is going to be fine, and there is much to appreciate about living a broken experience, and that’s what Greg wanted to achieve.

The soundscape is ethereal and airy, with soft violin, a single drum instrument limiting drama, piano sound effects, and peaceful cymbals. Although we would’ve loved to hear more heartfelt lyrics so we could’ve delved deeper into the raw experience of Greg’s emotional state that made him produce this piece in the first place, the beautiful mashup of vocals that are layered gives a fantastic texture to the song that makes it so good.  You can’t miss this one.

Father by B. Moyano

Repetition is something that’s all over the music. Verses and choruses repeat drum beats and basslines repeat, and riffs do too, the whole idea behind genres is based on a repetition of a certain arrangement that gives a certain musical vibe. IDM is a genre that utilizes repetition in a way that makes it safe to say that IDM is shamelessly repetitive. Repetition is IDM’s Achilles’ heel, and it can also be its saving grace. B. Moyano’s approach is a little unique.

B, Bruno Moyano is a composer, pianist, and producer from the town of Angoulême, France. His sole album, the gargantuan Father, has been released way back in 2020. Slept on for two years, it’s about time for this collection of original, groovy, interesting pieces to gain some traction. Father is an incredibly rich album. Full of classical IDM tropes, such as vintage synth drum kits, synth lead sounds, and even familiar-sounding pads and atmospherics, the music of this album does not sound fresh and inventive in the way you expect fresh and inventive music to be, the pieces lean instead, on meticulously crafted atmospheres, with delicate, sensible, and sensual arrangements, that are pristine, tender and effortless. Add to that the factor of familiarity in the sounds and the hypnotic effect of the shameless repetition for a final result that’s purely accessible, light, and enjoyable, in spite of the lengthy runtime.

T.136 and ‘Hello!’ Make an amazing introductory duo. With 2 distinct Latin grooves that run throughout the pieces, T.136 is quick and hectic, based on a nervous percussion and synthetic, driving leads that are manic and undecided, while Hello is much more melodic, tender, and sweet. The spaced phrases that make up the main motif of Hello are emotive and full of contented hope, and an upward modulation in the middle adds a lift that heightens all the feelings. A truly enjoyable sound. I Miss You is pure IDM. No fuss. This 7-minute monster hypnotizes completely before its first chord change happens, around the 2-minute mark, by then, hungry for a change, the piece takes you for a rollercoaster. With an inspired composition, this piece of driving IDM is one of the most rewarding listens I’ve heard in a very long time. The outro is impeccably melodic and exquisitely atmospheric. A delight.

Dream With Me has a really familiar chord progression that sounds sweet and tender. The heavy melancholia sets in after an elongated ambient intro, and what it adds is a melodic context to the dreamy ambiance. An airy, expansive, and contemplative piece. The pumping rhythms of the title track are again, no-fuss-IDM. Accentuated by a quirky, and somewhat eerie piano melody, the sound in the first half is a little unsettling, then it continues to grow outwards, until an outro that’s insanely puffy and comforting. Yearning and hopeful, Father is yet another contemplative composition that’s rich, lush, and intricate. The closing duo, I Love You and My Girl, blend seamlessly into each other. I Love You is Pink Floyd if they did IDM. The agonized synth leads are heartfelt, and the sensational progression sounds like it would fit perfectly somewhere on The Division Bell before it seamlessly morphs into the closing 10-minute symphony of ambiance that is My Girl.

  1. Moyano’s Father is a long slept-on collection of sweet, lovingly made IDM. This IDM, unusually, is actually intelligent, using trademark repetition to bolster and empower fully fleshed-out compositions and arrangements. Bruno Moyano is a talented musician who does it all well, achieving a sound that’s equally classic, brand new, and in both cases, uniquely his own.

Up At Dawn By Fat Cat Affair

0

For all cat lovers around the world I introduce to you from London, United Kingdom Fat Cat Affair, a talented multi-instrumentalist cat with a “fat love affair with music” said Fat Cat. He released his third single “Up At Dawn” on the 18th of November 2022 featuring vocalist and producer Clay Agnew on vocals

Fat Cat’s influence derives from his mom as she used to sing “Sweet songs” to him when he was just a young kitten which built a deep love for music in him. Since his early years Fat Cat has been traveling across Europe experiencing different music scenes and genres. He has developed a taste for blending pop with R&B and funk

“Up At Dawn” is a romantic acoustic pop song. It starts off with a beautiful plucked acoustic guitar accompanied by Agnew’s sweet vocals giving the love-in-the-air vibe, sprinkled with a jazzy piano counter-melody. As Agnew sings the line “its dawn, but an angel” an angelic choir rises in the background giving the words an impact on the music. As the song dives into the chorus, it takes on an ambient atmosphere with the strings section topped by a picked guitar melody countered by plucked strings.

The chorus ends with a descending piano line resolving into an arpeggio chord transitioning into the second verse. Right after the second chorus and before the guitar solo a bridge is introduced with a smooth key change from major to minor giving the song a warmer tone. The bridge is fueled by a tom groove and an overdrive guitar riff that concludes with a change back to the original. As the song reaches its end Fat Cat takes his last bow by playing an emotional guitar solo.

Cat Stevens, Chris Cornell and David Guilmour

Dwaya by Najib Maftah

0

The Moroccan-born, France-based artist, Najib Maftah, along with his musical project, “Najib Maftah & Friends,” is ready to invade the Folk/Rock scene with their debut single, “Dwaya.”

“Dwaya” means “my remedy” in Arabic. Although the single conveys a heartbreaking and longing state in its touching lyrical content, its title can be considered what music meant for Najib Maftah, as he found it his solace when he traveled to France in 2001 to continue his studies.

This musical act offers an authentic sonic utopia in which each musician contributes their talent to create something both nostalgic and contemporary. With acoustic elements, they offer an endearing folk sound with soft touches of rock, colored by a balanced mix of eastern and western flairs.

Maftah founded “Najib Maftah & Friends” in 2019 with his best friend Mohamed M’Sahel on percussions and his cousin Camille Bellot on flute, later joined by Yosr El Karyouni on violin and Noemie Roisil on double bass.

The song starts off with a melodic intro that sounds both pleasant and dismal. The melancholy is given a gray tinge as Maftah’s vocals join the soulful instrumentation, but there is still a brilliant glimmer of hope. His homey tone brings a lighthearted effect to the wistful, yearning lyricism he’s singing.

Each component appears to be a piece of a dazzling puzzle that seems simple at first but soon requires a great deal of sensibility to complete the entire picture. The dexterity of melody, harmony, texture, vocal performance, and music video all deliver a captivating output and make one a fan of this emerging project and the prime musicianship it delivers. I’m surely eager for what’s next!

Maya Yenn, British singer/songwriter/producer announces her upcoming music video set to be released on December 30th for her third and latest single “Better Luck Next Time” previously released last June. It gained success with over 10k plays on Spotify by getting picked on BBC 6 Music’s “Introducing Mixtape” in July and made Pick of the week on BBC Radio 1 in August.

With a musical career that just took off last year, Maya is achieving success after success. Her first single “tiptoe” released back in 2021 has now more than 37k plays on Spotify and was selected for BBC 6 Music’s BBC Introducing Mixtape, while her second single “How Much Sadness Can You Swallow?” got track of the week by BBC radio derby and won best music video at the British independent film festival 2022. Aside from being a sensational artist Maya also curates her cover art and writes/produces her music videos.

“Better Luck Next Time” is a dark-pop song powered by a groovy bass accompanied by Maya’s melodic vocals and dark lyrics. The song tells the story of a businessman who prioritizes work over everything. Even while the plane he is traveling on is crashing, he is still working to make the deadline. Without spoiling the details, the music video tells the tale of the businessman in a colorful theme as Maya portrays him with lyrical queues that change the scenery and the choreography. The colors are eye pleasing and the movements are engaging with dance choreography in the chorus that forces the viewer to dance along to it. Keep an eye out for the beat drop scene as she sings “billowing smoke and punctured lung” as it’s one of the scenes that caught my attention.

Sometimes by Rye Catchers

0

From Wisconsin, United States Rye Catchers is a musical project made by songwriter/producer David McClintick Roberts who isn’t defined by a single genre as he explores around, but considers electro-pop to be his “comfortable territory”. Featuring Spanish singer Nekane, he releases “Sometimes”, a song that captures the beauty of daydreaming and the tension of the mind’s struggle.

As the song starts, it catches the listener’s attention with dreamy pads over a grounding drum beat, paving the way for a hard-hitting groovy bass to come in creating tension over the dreamy atmosphere the pads create. Layer by layer in the intro, a melodic guitar line, plucking synths, and backing vocals are added. The verse shines the light on Nekane’s sweet voice as she describes different daydream situations in a melodic vocal line with backing vocals highlighting the end of each sentence. Which adds depth to the vocals. As the chorus kicks in, the song shifts into a dreamy mood achieved by a huge background atmosphere of backing vocals, synth pads, a sustained lead guitar line, and picking rhythm guitar while the vocals are doubled giving a dimensional ambiance. Before the second chorus, a catchy arpeggiating synth takes the foreground while Nekane sings the chorus in a pushed-back effect creating a moment of clarity. As she counts to four the song explodes in a full chorus followed by an outro that summarises the song.

In a world where money is always first on everyone’s list comes a man who goes against the grain; Singer/songwriter/composer/multi-instrumentalist Matt Soren with his music project “The One Tonic”, refutes the concept with his latest Electronic Alt-rock single “Richest Man Alive” released on Thanksgiving day 22nd of November 2022.“Richest Man Alive is about how awesome it is to have a great family, even when you’re totally broke” said The One Tonic

The background sound of children playing and laughing starts the song off, emphasizing the family theme. As a deep pulsing synth bass fades in, expressive talking vocals come in to establish the mood, before the rock-influenced drums take the song to a new level blending rock and electronica. The words “I’m the richest man alive” trigger the chorus, immediately transforming the song into a euphoric atmosphere. A catchy bridge follows the second chorus, featuring a melodic piano line, an electronic drum beat, and Alt rock-influenced guitar plucks.

WATCHDOGS by James Alynes

0

Artist James Alynes based in Montreal, Canada, released a moving and passionate creation called “Watchdogs’’, a rap rock tune on the 27th of October.

Often mixing dream pop with rap and dropping many singles in 2022, James is a songwriter, producer, and vocalist. He is inspired by artists like Kanye, Childish Aham ino, and Leo Ferre. He believes that music is an art that requires an explorative and playful mindset that needs discipline more than anything else.

The song is about love and the back-and-forth nature of it. We love a song that is relatable and catchy in a non-generic way. There is something about how James represented his musical style. It’s rich in texture, extremely persuasive with its melody and tone, and It’s familiar yet it’s not. We actually caught a glimpse of Kendrick Lamar’s taste in this track. The overall sound of the song is super hyped and heartfelt. Its overpowering energy with a rigorous texture and rich sound effects blended with the prominent vocals of James is a real ear treat. The soundscape is R&B with a brush of rock tones that symbolize some holiness in the harmony. The musical arrangement is rich with guitar, some light bass, and drum sound effects. The pace is medium in music and there are also clapping and hi-hat sound effects that lead the pace of the beat, but James’ rapping is crazy fast and so very enjoyable to follow with his smooth flow. What’s noticeable in the song is the heavily processed vocals and sound effects which make a unique aesthetic feel to the song. Listen to this track as soon as possible for a fresh outlook on rap and R&B.
