FEMBOT by KOLEKLEIN

0

After his successful west coast tour, the American producer, KOLEKLEIN just released his debut single “FEMBOT”. Apart from being a producer, songwriter, artist, and DJ, KOLEKLEIN is the founder of ILLUS Records which supports independent musicians to pursue a full-time career in music by creating and developing innovative ways through partnering up with the music and media industry leaders, especially after the pandemic. The artist has a strong fan base that reaches over 46K followers on Instagram. “FEMBOT” is already at 2.3K streams on Spotify in only 2 weeks resulting in 1K monthly Spotify listeners. The track has an unusual and abstract concept which is demonstrated in sound by combining unorthodox cyber twist elements of Dubstep and Tearout with a festive scene. the song is highly fueled with futuristic elements and sounds making it the perfect soundtrack for a future, robotic movie. It tells a story of a female robot that is merged with a human female resulting in a disastrous and dangerous ending of her going rogue and removing her free will. It’s a story yet a warning of the near-future technology and what it might cause when human biology is messed with by technology. A very dynamic, abstract track that needs exploring and is surely not to be missed.

Amigos de Pega by Lewis Pe

0

Barcelona-based artist Lewis Pe is back with his new single “Amigos de Pega”. After releasing his debut album “The Castle” in 2021 via Spanish label Nuevos Medios, Pe decided to give his song “F.W.F.” Spanish lyrics and a neo-psychedelic twist with the help of the producer Juan Feduchi so, let’s see how it turned out.

Lewis Pe’s soft expressive vocals are the first thing you’ll encounter when playing “Amigos de Pega”, it has a mellow start controlled by Pe’s vocal melody that slowly gets more groovy with added layers of bass, atmospheric synths, and guitars. It has a consistent nice flow keeping its psychedelic core while adding glimpses of pop bright melodies using a mix of synth and guitar in perfect harmony. The interlude around minute 2:15 refreshed the song’s dynamics and added a fresh layer of sound that reminded me of the 70s and 80s art rock taking us to a smooth outro.

“Amigos de Pega” is a sweet chilling tune that reflects a lot of emotions through melodies and vocal delivery. The transition from the original version shows lots of musicianship and diverse writing skills from Lewis Pe and producer Juan Feduchi. Totally enjoyed it and will be looking forward to more. Cheers!

Underwater by Lucy James

0

Hailing from Derby, UK, the soulful singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Lucy James. She’s back with her calming ballad, “Underwater.” That’s following “Cloudy Vision,” which she released last year.

Certain songs have hypnotizing powers. Once you listen to them, you find yourself enticed to close your eyes and dive into them. Undoubtedly, Lucy James’ “Underwater” has that effect. I’ve listened to the song during the day with the sun peeking out at my window, some noisy sounds are here and there, and daily tasks are running. And I’ve also played it with nothing besides me but darkness, and the ethereal voice of Lucy and the soothing harmonies spreading out like cold breezes. I don’t believe it’s a personal mood, but rather the atmosphere created by connecting with the song and sinking with it underwater.

The song starts with a relaxing water sound, the kind you hear and feel as if the ocean is hugging you. The single is a Pop, Jazz, and Soul hybrid, and that’s where Lucy James’ abilities are demonstrated. The poignant, blue lyrical theme conveys how emotional distance can grow in relationships such as friendships and feels like there’s a surface locking between you, yet the instrumentals send peace into hearts and make them feel warm. Connor Botherway-Hill’s smooth guitar playing, along with the piano’s jazzy vibe, the patting drumming with passionate strings and woodwinds, gives the best sentimental experience, especially because of how they combine with the clean, serene vocal line that portrays the hurtful process in a delicate manner.

“Underwater” is a song that takes one on a journey to the deepest parts of the ocean within themselves, then helps them return to shore. Enjoy the immersion!

You’re Doing Great by Raining Satellites

0

Music can be a great expression of the self and the feelings of the artist, but there’s a threshold after which it starts to get a little too personal. Here’s a record that approaches this threshold at a dangerous speed.

Raining Satellites is the musical project of Michael J. Sanders, a Staten Island native who’s a self-taught musician who’s been making music for nearly two decades, alone and in groups. This album finds him in a pensive and dark mood, which he translates into moody and somber, nearly minimal synth-pop, with varying levels of success.

The 7 songs that form this album are consistent and cohesive, maintaining a vibe that persists along the album’s runtime, making it sound like one lone body of the composition, which is a great feat in my humble opinion. The production is nice too. Almost all of the songs are populated with a few lines, namely a pair of synthesizers, a drum machine, and one or two lines of vocals. All of those lines are recorded and mixed well, with no vocals bullying the synths or beats fighting bass lines for attention. Song 1, Heartbreaker, features a very engaging rhythmic bass that keeps things exciting. Song 4, Modern Love Letter, starts very sparsely with singing that verges on being spoken word, before picking up in the second half, with the introduction of a solid beat. ‘Staying Up For Breakfast’ is built around a cool riff and a steady beat, it also features a chorus section with manic processed beats that get intense, in a refreshing way.

Where this album undoubtedly falters is in the vocal deliveries. Often we find Mr.Saunders struggling to find the proper register, often more we catch him going completely out of tune, and it’s those moments where the album starts to feel a little too personal, too in the moment, too tumultuous and real. Unprocessed, untreated, and raw. Some other, more experienced artists can pull this style off with great results, think Nick Cave and Tom Waits as examples. I, personally, could not shake off the feeling that this record needed more polishing and maybe a few vocal retakes, such as would not change the direct honesty of the words, but only make them easier to digest musically.

Crooked Again by One Room Schoolhouse

0

If there’s one thing I have in common with One Room Schoolhouse, we both agree that the world needs more synths playing major 7th chords. One Room Schoolhouse play what they describe as New Wave meets Jazz Pop. Big words for sure, but how accurate are they?

Crooked Again is a gentle pop tune, dominated by (I hate this term) jazzy chords, throbbing synth bass, and simple beats. Those things are attempts at Pop, Jazz, and New Wave respectively. And while all attempts are solid and create a fun tune, they end up being just a pop song with an edge. The drums sound a little flat and the vocals might need another go at the mixing station. Not to detract from the heartfelt lyrics or the strong, confident delivery.

This is an intelligent song that aims high, and could easily have achieved its potential had the mix been a little more deliberate and the dynamic range been a little wider. I would be on the lookout for upcoming releases from One Room Schoolhouse, a band with nice pop sensibilities and an elegant school of songwriting, and in the future, hopefully, a more keen eye and ear for their production and mixing.
